5 Funny, Unique, and Unusual Calendars

Updated on November 17, 2015

Looking for Calendars That are Unusual, Unique, and a Little Weird?

Are you tired of the usual calendars with beautiful scenery, cute animals, and pretty flowers? Think "ho-hum" when you see another calendar of the newest popular movie? Do you yawn at the latest "inspirational quotes of the day" calendar? Are you looking for a calendar that's more fun -- something a little more unique and interesting, or just plain weird?

Here you'll find a variety of funny, strange, or unusual calendars that may be just what you're looking for. Or you might find an interesting calendar that will be the perfect gift for your hard-to-buy-for friend or family member.

There is no overlying theme for the selection of calendars here -- just that I thought they were interesting and unique or quirky in some way. They're not your ordinary run-of-the-mill calendars!

Steampunk Wall Calendar

Historical and futuristic elements

Steampunk 2016 Wall Calendar

Are you a part of the "steampunk" community? Do you know what it is? Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction / alternate history fiction that uses steam power in its machinery such as what was used in the 19th century. The futuristic mechanical inventions are what might have been developed if we had never left the steam power age.

As the description for this calendar says, "The romance of the past meets the technology of the future" in a world full of "cogs and rivets, goggles and corsets".

The work of Jules Verne is an early form of this genre. Steampunk combines historical and futuristic elements with Victorian-aged mores that are intertwined with futuristic technology.

Painted Hands Wall Calendar

Creative and Colorful

Painted Hands 2016 Wall Calendar

This is one of my favorite calendars. Each month includes a delightful depiction of an intricately painted animal on a hand, or two hands.

If you check closely, you'll see that the image on the cover of this calendar isn't a real pink flamingo, but a hand positioned and painted to look like this bird. The thumb is tucked under the other fingers to form the beak, and the wrist is painted to look like feathers on the neck of this tropical wading bird.

The other pages of this calendar include more cleverly created mammals, fish, and birds

To see more of these realistic and intricately detailed painted hands by Guido Daniel, watch the video below.

Fractals Wall Calendar

Mathematical Beauty

Fractals 2016 Wall Calendar

If you have a math or science background, you've most likely heard of fractals. Otherwise, you may not know what this fascinating concept is. Basically, a fractal is a never-ending pattern that will look similar whether you magnify it many times, or look at it on a larger scale.

Many objects in nature have fractal patterns including clouds, trees, shore lines, rivers. Abstract fractals can be generated by a computer calculating the same simple equation over and over.

This fractal calendar has 12 beautiful representations of colorful fractal artwork. Shapes and colors are repeated on smaller and larger scales.

Learn More About Fractals

Fractals are fascinating!

Visit The Fractal Foundation to learn more about these fascinating math and science concepts.

This website has great resources for educators and parents who want to teach their kids more about fractals. It also has some great videos and images of fractals.

Also watch this YouTube video as it zooms into more and more detail on a Mandelbrot fractal set.

Underwater Dogs

Endearingly Silly

Underwater Dogs 2016 Mini Wall Calendar

These funny photos by Seth Casteel are of dogs retrieving underwater balls with gusto.

Seth is a Lifestyle Pet Photographer, and has had his work featured in publications including National Geographic, the New York Times. He's even been on Duck Dynasty (although he looked rather bemused by the whole thing).

Seth Casteel Also Has a Best-Selling Book - Underwater Dogs, the book

This book has more than 80 underwater photos of dogs gleefully fetching balls in the water.

If you have had dogs that love water, undoubtedly you've seen how they jump in and fetch sticks or balls, and come out dripping wet and shake off the water exuberantly after they've retrieved their object. Seth shows what happens with the dogs below the surface of the water, with bubbles escaping, eyes large, and ears and fur streaming back in the water.

Awkward Family Photos

Awkward Family Photos 2015 Mini Wall Calendar

All of us have awkward moments with our families -- some more embarrassing than others. And some of these moments get captured in photos. This amusing calendar includes daily awkward family photos, from unhappy kids, to awkward poses, to silly fashions (which at the time of the photo may have been stylish....) I bet you'll love paging through these odd and silly family photos! You might even feel a sense of nostalgia for your own awkward family moments.

From the product description:

...these pictures of family bonding will keep you gasping, cringing, and laughing—all at the same time.

This calendar is based on the hilarious blog with the same name, Awkward Family Photos.

Everybody gets their own calendar in their Christmas stocking. This year, my son got a daily psychadoodle calendar that we have so much fun with. You finish the daily doodle and then read about what you've drawn on the back. It's cute and silly.

@anonymous: I love these tree houses too -- it would be so much fun to have my own "hide-away" in something like the tree house on the cover of the calendar.

You got me on the tree houses calendar, love that one. I would love to have a livable tree house, insulated, running water, and electricity. It would not need to be big.

Although the pretty scenic calendars are nice, sometimes having funny, interesting and unique calendars around the house can give you a 'lift' when you need one, especially the ones that have a new picture or joke or the like every day! *SquidAngel Blessed*

What a great idea! I don't use a traditional calendar but if I did, it would surely be something fun (and funny) like many of your suggestions.

I'm a sucker for the pretty picture calendars, usually horses, although I was given a funny calendar one year, and I got a new joke/cartoon every day. That was a lot of fun. Really well put together lens.
