Garbage Disposal Reviews - Top 2 Units Go Head To Head

Updated on June 5, 2012

Picking the Right Garbage Disposal

I recently had to get a replacement for my old garbage disposal. I never really gave much thought to how they work or what different types there are. Wow, did I learn a lot before deciding on the wining Garbage disposer to grace my kitchen. I will go over the features you need to consider for deciding which one is right for you. I will compare the 2 top brand and models in a head to head match up. Read on to decide which one wins.

Picking the Right Garbage Disposal

What do all these features mean?

Whether you are remodeling your entire kitchen or just want to upgrade or install a new garbage disposal, shopping for the perfect one can seem like a daunting task. With so many styles and versions available, it can be hard to know which one will be perfect for you and your needs. If you find yourself in the market for a new garbage disposal, here are a few things to consider before you commit to a purchase.

Horsepower- A good thing to remember is the higher the horsepower, the faster and quicker the disposal will be able to handle large loads which prolongs the life of the unit. If you have a large family or cook on a regular basis, purchasing a garbage disposal that has a ¾ HP or higher motor is the best option.

More Important Features

So many features to keep track of...

Feed Type- Garbage disposals come in two varieties- batch feed or continuous feed. Continuous feed is the most popular selection and allows for food waste to be fed into the unit continuously until it's all disposed of. Continuous feed disposers are usually more convenient to use. A batch feed on the other hand requires a cover to be placed atop the unit for it to work. This provides the highest level of safety keeping fingers, silverware, and other valuables safe from the grinding components, however it can take more time to dispose of a large amount of food waste as it can only do so much at once.

Grinding Stages- Standard garbage disposal models feature 1 grinding stage which tears and pulverizes the food into small particles. There are also models that feature multiple grinding stages (2 or 3) that effectively liquefies the food waste so it passes easily through plumbing and breaks down quicker making it better for the environment.

Top Garbage Disposal Brands

The top 2 brands of garbage disposals

If you've been in the market for a garbage disposal in the past, you are sure to be familiar with the top two brands. InSinkErator and Waste King are the two most popular manufacturers of food waste disposers and for good reasons. Here's a quick look at the two brands and how they compare to each other. For in-depth Garbage Disposal Reviews and comparison tables; see my website

InSinkErator- ISE is quite knowledgeable about garbage disposals, and they should be. They created the very first one back in the early 1900s. Their most popular line is the Evolution series which features a number of high quality garbage disposal units to work for a number of different situations and needs. Whether you need compact unit to fit in tight spaces or a unit to work specifically with septic systems, ISE has it. With nearly a century of expertise and a wonderful selection of high-quality, high-end garbage disposal, you are sure to be happy with any ISE purchase you make.

Waste King- Waste King has been in business for over 60+ years and has been a household name when it comes to garbage disposal units. Their main feature is a permanent magnet motor which allows for quicker pulverization of food waste, creating a longer life span for the product while using less water and electricity to power the disposer. Not only are WK units reliable and well-designed, but they also feature the best and longest warranties on the market.

Waste King L-8000 - VS - InSinkErator Evolution Excel

And the winner is......

InSinkErator Evolution Excel- The Evolution Excel is top-of-the-line when it comes to high-powered garbage disposals. The 1HP induction motor features 3 grind stages to truly liquefy food waste which is easier on your plumbing and on the environment. The SoundSeal technology makes operation whisper quiet compared to other standard models. Many people often comment they have to check to make sure the unit is on because it runs so quietly. This unit also comes with a 7 year warranty.

Waste King L-8000- The 8000 is part of the Legend series by Waste King. The 1 HP permanent magnet motor makes extremely quick work of even the toughest of food waste which in turn conserves water and electricity. The entire grinding chamber and grinding components are constructed of stainless steel which means the unit will resist rust and corrosion ensuring longevity in the life of the product. This product all comes with a lifetime warranty (non-transferable) which is quite astonishing!

And the winner is? Well, it's important to mention that the ISE Evolution Excel comes with a price tag almost 3 times as much as the WK L-8000 model. Is the extra money really worth the difference? Both units are quite efficient and effective at grinding and pulverizing food waste into tiny particles. The permanent magnet motor of the Waste King will produce extremely tiny particles and do it quickly, but the ISE Evolution Excel features 3 grinding stages which will liquefy food. In our opinion both do a bang up job of getting rid of food waste quickly and easily. The ISE does prove to be a bit quieter than the Waste King, but even the Waste King is pretty quiet compared to standard models.

For me it was important to get the quietest Garbage Disposal on the market so when it is running the grandchildren will not wake from their nap. For that matter I don't want to wake from my nap either. LOL So we ended up spending the extra money for the ISE Evolution Excel and boy is it quiet and smooth. For most people I think the Waste King will do almost as good a job for a lot less, so in the end you decide who won this match up between 2 good companies.

Some videos on the quiet features of the Evolution Excel

Please tell me what type of gargabe disposal you have.

Wow - you actually got me to climb under my sink and check out my garbage disposal. Unfortunately, the label is turned to the wall so I can't tell what kind I have but I do see I have 1/3 HP which now doesn't seem good enough. I also learned I have continuous feed. Had you asked me before reading this article, I'd have had no clue! Nice job comparing these two disposals!
