Décor Fridge Magnets
Functional Art Décor in the Kitchen
I love fridge magnets; they're functional and fun décor for the fridge, which is my type of ornament e.g. artistic art décor with a practical use. For me ornaments, attractive as they may be and although they may add to the décor, without a function are little more than just dust collectors. The type of ornaments I really like are the ones with a practical function e.g. a decorative jug on the sideboard or in a display cabinet which I like to get out and use on special occasions.
Fridge magnets fall into the category of being functional art décor ideal for pinning that important message or recipe to the fridge.
This article which features our growing collection of fridge magnets looks at the various types available, their artistic and décor value, and their functionality. All photos in this article featuring our collection were taken by me.
Our Collection of Fridge Magnets
Fine Art Décor and Humour
The first fridge magnets we had were the 'Do It' and 'Important' plastic ones as free gifts and card ones as freebies. The pink bottle opener was a Christmas gift and the clear plastic ones were from my mother.
We liked them so much that now whenever travelling on holiday, or a day trip, we always keep an eye open in the tourist shops for more; looking particularly for the 3D ornamental ones to bolster our collection. However, not wishing to go overboard we don't buy just for the sake of buying, so we window shop and it we happen to see one we particularly like then we'll treat ourselves and buy it.
Therefore, our ornamental 3D collection isn't that great at the moment but slowly growing; and in time if we start to get overrun with fridge magnets we can then start weeding out the older and cheaper ones e.g. the cardboard ones to make space for the more artistic and tasteful magnets.
The way we've organised the display and use of these magnets on our fridge is simplicity in itself. Generally, the ones on display on door and those in use on the side for pinning important notes, messages and recipes; below is a brief description and a more in-depth look at each type and their uses.

From cardboard and plastic to resin and plaster moulds
Fridge magnets are made from different materials but most commonly are made with either cardboard or plastic e.g. card, plastic, clear plastic and for ornament fridge magnets resin based plastics or plaster moulds. Card is obviously the cheapest and the least durable as opposed to the plastic ones that will last eons. My favourite are the 3D ornamental ones which are classy, stylish, durable, artistic and functional. Below I take a closer look at each type highlighting their benefits, use and durability.
Great for Pinning Notes
And Leaving Messages
One great use of these decorative magnets is pinning notes and leaving messages as useful reminders for you, shopping lists, your favourite recipe or important notes to other family members. I find them particular handy for all these and it's so easy and convenient. Write your message on a notelet or small piece of paper, choose a convenient magnet and just stick your note underneath it. And if you've just tried out a new recipe and want to keep it handy for a while just stick that safely under a magnet until needed.

Cheap and cheerful but fun
Cardboard Magnets can be just humorous messages with a picture such as one in our collection which reads "Like a good vintage wine you get better with age" or be promotional. The only problem with cardboard is they will become frayed in time around the edges and begin to look tatty; especially if they are frequently used for pinning messages and notes to the fridge.

Craft Your Own Fridge Magnet
Take an old cardboard fridge magnet that’s old, tatty and faded and use it as the backing for your own design crafted from old birthday cards or by using family photos printed on card from your computer.
For Christmas tags we keep the best of the Christmas cards and by freehand we cut the picture out in an oval shape or follow the contour of the picture so it’s an irregular but attractive shape. This is just one step away from transforming an old card fridge magnet; all that’s required is to cut a cute picture from a birthday card and stick the old magnet onto the back with PVA glue.
Make sure the card isn’t too big or heavy to be supported by the magnet and obviously being made from just card it too will become frayed around the edges in time; it’s not durable but it can be fun making them, it might brighten up your kitchen and it doesn’t cost anything.

Practical and Functional
The plastic ones with single words such as the 'Do it!' and 'Important' which we have are tended to be more practical than artistic but with tasteful font style are still elegant. We frequently use them as intended for pinning important notes, messages and recipes to the fridge. They're durable but with constant use do get grubby and need the occasional clean, or rinse under the tap.
The other plastic fridge magnet we have is a pink bunny bottle opener, and very handy it is too; if we forget where we've put our other bottle openers when we have a few friends around for a social evening and a few beers then it's handy to know there's a bottle opener on the fridge, even if it is pink; which isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it does the job.
Bottle Openers on the Fridge
Functional and Artistic Décor
Bottle opener fridge magnets are functional, can be artistic and add to the fridge décor. Even if you don't use it often it's always useful to have a bottle opener stuck to your fridge for when it is needed.

Humorous and Durable
The Clear Plastic magnets are predominantly funny or cute pictures with a humorous messages such as "If you want the best seat in the house you'll have to move the cat", although some are artistic such as the Romany Art fridge magnet in our collection.
Some are also promotional. Although more expensive than card the clear plastic makes good economic sense for an enterprising company wanting a bit of inexpensive advertising, if it's done tastefully and artistically then it's more likely to be stuck to the side of the fridge rather than just binned.

3D Ornaments for the Fridge
The 3D Ornaments which magnetically stick on our fridge and made from resin or plaster moulds are our favourite; an ornament on the fridge that's colourful and adds dimension to the display on the fridge door; and as with all other magnets in our collection can also be functional for pinning messages and notes. These 3D ornaments are very durable, only needing the occasional light dusting.

Should Ornaments be Functional?
Do you like your ornaments for display only?
I like things which have a practical use as well as being designer art; although as you will see from some of my other review articles we do also like ornaments that are just for display only; but where I can find a functional use for something, then all the better.
