Grill Pans for Indoor Grilling

Updated on November 3, 2014

Grilling Indoors

Stove Top Grilling with a Grill Pan

Grill pans are cookware that allows stove-top grilling fun! You can use a grill pan and actually enjoy a delicious indoor barbecue right from your own stove-top. If you've never heard of or used a grill pan in your kitchen, let me tell you why a grill pan can be an essential piece of cookware that you'll really love using. A grill pan or grill skillet has a ribbed bottom so that the food stays above any fatty drippings, and you get those cool grill lines on your food. Needless to say this is a much healthier way to enjoy meats. Grill Pans make excellent gifts, too! I have made everything on my grill pan from steaks and burgers, to grilled tomatoes and other veggies, and they all come out tasting marvelous, like you cooked them outdoors on a barbecue grill! Read on to learn more about grilling indoors with grill pans and where you get new recipes and purchase a grill pan cookbook.

Why I Love Using the Grill Pan

Grill Pans

I love using the grill pan because it allows me to enjoy grilled foods, year round. I love having an alternative to the outdoor barbecue grill that really makes the food taste great and gives it the grill lines that you get with outdoor cooking. I also love that I can use if for delicate things like fish and veggies that I normally would not be able to "grill" because it would fall through the grates. I use my grill pan for grilled sandwiches sometimes, to make them look fancier, and I even use my grill pan for hot dogs. The food always tastes better grilled in a grill plan verses a plain skillet.

Another great benefit of using the grill pan is the clean up aspect. I chose a grill pan with a Teflon coating and clean up is a cinch. After using it, I run it under water and let it sit in the sink while we're having dinner, then when it comes time to do the dishes just wipe with a soapy sponge and wa la! It's sparkling clean ready for my next indoor barbecue.

What Is A Grill Pan?

Frying Pans for Grilling

Using a grill pan on your stove top gives you the opportunity to enjoy grilled foods indoors.

I've been cooking and baking for a long time and I can honestly say that I've used many leading brands of cookware. I got a few years out of them and moved on to another leading brand. I've never really been so impressed with anything, though, that I thought I would refer it to a friend to try out or even buy the same set again, until recently.

I don't know if your familiar with grill pans, but they are an absolute dream to use in the kitchen. Calphalon and Lodge Logics make the best ones. These marvelous pans are designed like a grill. You can get cast iron grill pan or one with a non-stick surface. I prefer the non-stick surface, which makes clean up a breeze.

If you've never used a grill pan in the kitchen, you simply must try it! Hamburgers, steaks, chicken, anything you would grill on a barbecue grill, you can make on a grill pan with very similar results. Also, if your someone that likes the idea of not cooking your meat in fat, (like that of a regular pan), you'll really appreciate the way the grill pan is designed. The grill pan has grooves that allow the meat to grill, not fry.

Grill pans are the greatest invention ever!

Of course, cleaning up after dinner is a breeze when you cook with a nonstick grill pan. I spray mine with cooking spray to make it even easier.

Cast Iron Grill Pan

Cast Iron Grill Pan

Le Creuset's square skinny grill pan is made of durable, enameled cast iron that heats quickly and evenly. High ridges on the cooking surface keep fat away from the meat. Dual handles on opposite sides make it easy to pick up and bring to the table or countertop. This grill pan doesn't require seasoning, and it won't rust or absorb flavors. Dishwasher-safe. Cast iron is one of the best materials for distributing heat gently and thoroughly and is ideal for induction ranges. The strong enamel coating will not absorb odors or flavors, and is easy to clean. Grill Pan Cookbook

Recipes for the Grill Pan

Love to barbecue no matter what the season or where you are? If you answered yes, this Grill Pan cookbook is for you. Surrender no more to the seasons of the sun, for you can enjoy delicious food, cooked to absolute perfection, any night that you wish to stay inside, writes author Jamee Ruth in "Grill Pan Cookbook." The basic rule for using a grill pan is to preheat the pan over medium heat until it is very hot, and Ruth advises using a pan with a nonstick finish. The recipes are relatively simple, most with a half-dozen or so ingredients, and use contemporary flavors like wasabi paste and citrus-raspberry vinaigrette. Aside from the obvious indoor-outdoor differences, cooking delicate food is one are where the grill pan can set itself apart from the traditional grill. With no slats for the food to fall through, small or flaky items like artichoke hearts or mussels can be tossed on the grill without worrying about them feeding the fire instead of your family.

Love the grill pan. We have two of them. One is the reversible professional pan and the other is simply a pan. We use it instead of an outdoor grill.

I like to use grill pans in the winter when it is too cold outside to use my barbecue. They put nice grill marks in the meat and also keep it out of any fat.

I might have to get a grill pan since our outdoor gas grill was recently stolen. It was old and falling apart--it was my dad's for like 20 years before he got a new one--but still a bummer that somebody took it. I have a George Foreman electric indoor grill, and it's cool, but it's big and ungainly and can be hard to clean. A Paula Deen grill pan to match my cookware sounds like a good idea. Thanks for an informative lens.

A great technique for even casual cooks to learn is how to use a grill pan. On many occasions it simply is not possible or convenient to utilize an outdoor grill. However, this should not prevent you from enjoying the fun of grilling.

Not a bad idea. I'd be curious about how the food would come out vs. an electric indoor grill (George Foreman, panini grill). I for one prefer the control over the heat that gas gives, so maybe I'll invest in a grill pan soon.
