Grow your own coffee!

Updated on January 26, 2015

Drop a seed and sip your cup!

How about a cup of coffee early in the morning at your bed. Even that thought would make you have a sip the very moment if you are a coffee lover like me, and how about when that sip has coffee seeds actually grown by you! exciting isn't it. This thought made me grow some coffee plants in my garden. I would love to share what I learnt about growing coffee from a plant to your cup and some of the benefits of growing this sweet looking plant.Scroll down with a sip, aroma spreading all your mouth touching all the corners of your tongue. All you need are seeds or a potted plant which you can buy from market.

Where to grow?

Choose your place....

Coffee is such a plant that you can grow it indoors as well as outdoors. All you need to take care is of the humidity, temperature and the amount of sunlight it gets.

Coffee grows in a moist climate, warm temperature with about 4-5 hrs of sunlight per day.

So decide where your coffee plant has to go. you can purchase seeds or a potted plant.

If you are planning to grow it in a pot, keep the pot in a window sill where there is enough sunlight. (Don't forget to place a plastic plate below your pot to keep your sill clean and hold the extra drained water from pot).

You can plant it in the soil in your backyard or garden. plant the seeds about 6-10 cm below the soil.

Don't forget to water your plant everyday with about a little less than half a liter per day.

Picking the fruits

Small, green berries will begin to appear 1½ to 2 months after fertilization. In another 7-9 months, the green berries will begin to turn red, and that’s when they’ll be ripe for picking. Each berry has two beans inside it, but not all berries will change color at the same time, so use discretion when picking.

Once you have picked your fruit off the tree and removed the beans, roast them and start your day with your very own, homemade cup of Joe!
