How To Assemble A Colorful Cabinet

Updated on December 2, 2012

Weekend Project - DIY Cabinet

Making a cabinet is not an easy job, and not to mention if you have to build a cabinet from scratch. How can we build a cabinet without needed to start from scratch? Is there anyway we can build a cabinet fast? Yes, you can! There are many ready for assemble cabinet or storage shelves that are available in the market. What you need to do is just open the box and assemble all the parts according to the assembling guide provided and you will be able to build a beautiful cabinet by yourself.

This is how I make the colorful shelve cabinet like what you can see in the picture. I bought many single utility shelves and combine them together with some own made simple connector. If I can do it, why can't you?

The first things to get - Buy the DIY storage cabinet

The first things to get is to buy some DIY storage shelves according to how big your shelves you wanted. Without it, you can never start to make your own cabinet easily. Usually this item will come with all parts in a box. What you need to do is open it up and assemble all the part according to the assembling guide.

Tools required to do the job

DIY Cabinets - Tools required
DIY Cabinets - Tools required

There are several simple tools required to start this project. What I use are tools that can be find in every household.

1. Scissor - To cut out the connectors

2. Plier - To fold the aluminum connectors

3. Aluminum plates - For making the connectors

4. A utility knife - To cut the aluminum connectors

5. Hole Punch - To make holes on the aluminum connectors

6. Screw driver - To tighten screw

p/s: You can replace the aluminum plate with other steel plate or any material that is suitable and strong enough to hold the shelves together.

Design the Connectors

These are the connectors that I have designed to connect the individual storage shelf. There are 3 types of connectors, the 2 holes and simple flat connector is to connect the upper and lower storage shelf.

The bend connector is use to hold together adjacent storage shelf.

The biggest connector with it unique shape is use to hold the upper and lower shelves together at the back.

These connector I have designed will probably be suitable to use to connect most of the storage shelf. All you need to do is to measure the distance between the screw holes and the thickness of the board.
