Feng Shui and Bed Choice

The bed you sleep in plays an important role in your happiness

The ideal, from a Feng Shui point of view is to opt for bed that is medium sized, neither too high, nor too low, and made of natural materials. Wood is preferred over metal, as the latter is too Yang. It is strongly recommended for your bed to be equipped with a headboard, but if this is not the case, just push the bed against a solid wall. It is also advisable you avoid buying a bed that has drawers under it, as they can confuse the Chi energy flows.

Feng Shui and the Curtains

According to the Feng Shui rules, windows without curtains represent a Yang element that needs to be balanced by a Yin one - the curtains, in our case. If well chosen and in harmony with the other décor items in the room, the curtains will not only provide your bedroom with a modern and stylish look. They will also block the too bright light which might bother you during your afternoon nap, and they will act as a barrier for the positive energy, not allowing it to leave the room.

Top 10 Tips for a Feng Shui Bedroom

  1. Restrict your bedroom activities to sleeping and making love.

For various excuses, people often use the bedroom for different activities like working out, reading, studying, watching TV and even eating. If you want the Feng Shui harmony to govern your bedroom, avoid doing other things than having a rest or making love in this room.

  2. No work related objects in the bedroom.

No matter how small your house is, work related objects like a computer, various documents or files should not be in your bedroom. This is a room for you and your partner's intimacy. It's not a warehouse. Don't let negative energies flood it. Keep all objects that are not related to your private life out of the bedroom.

  3. Make your bed every day and tidy up the room.

Start your day by opening the windows, making the bed and arranging the room. It will only take a few minutes, but it will bring in a lot of benefits. The advantages of a tidy and clean bedroom are endless: energy flows better, you feel less cramped and confined to your problems, you can think clearer. Your sleep will be more profound; you will feel more relaxed and have fewer nightmares.

  4. As a couple, adopt a Feng Shui compliant sleeping position.

This means that the woman (Yin) will sleep on the left side of the bed, and the man (Yang) on its right side. From the same perspective, twin beds are to be avoided as they separate the two bodies.

  5. Do not place the bed under the window or facing the door.

The bed's position is very important in Feng Shui. It should not be placed between the window and the door. This way, you will avoid sleeping at energy crossways. Also, avoid a bed placement that would make your feet point towards the door. According to the ancient Chinese traditions, this would be the position of the dead. Translated into modern Feng Shui practices, sleeping in such a position would drain your body of its life force.

  6. Go for rounded corners.

According to Feng Shui principles, sharp edges - especially those of furniture piece - draw negative energies.

  7. No appliances in the bedroom

Take out the TV, the computer or any other appliances you may have placed in your bedroom. They attract negative energies and don't let you relax. You go to bed for some rest; you can watch TV in the living room.

  8. Close the doors during the night

Feng Shui practitioners recommend closing the doors during the night in order not to let the energy flows mingle. Actually, the bedroom is the place where you disconnect yourself from the world, trying to regain your strenght.

  9. Let natural light come in

This is why curtains are very convenient for a Feng Shui bedroom. You can let the sun light come into the room during the day and separate yourself from the night's darkness.

  10. De-clutter the bedroom

It's a natural tendancy to keep objects we don't use anymore. Who knows when we might need them in the future. Try to overcome it, and de-clutter your house and your bedroom, in particular in order to let the chi circulate freely. Don't forget about the closet! This is where we usually stack all sort of things we don't succeed to take the decision of throwing away.

  1. Earth Colors

One of the five Feng Shui elements, Earth helps you create stability and establish harmony in your couple or between your mind and soul. Earth is often represented in home decorations by potted plants. You can do that, but potted plants are not a common decor for a bedroom. So, if you prefer to keep the plants in the living room and terasse, it's advisable you bring the Earth into your bedroom by alternative means. One option is to buy some bed sheets in Earth colors (beige, brown, light yellow, cream), but you can also bring the Earth energy into your bedroom using these chromatic tones for the walls or in a poster.

  2. Fire Colors

Another Feng Shui element, fire helps activate your personal energy during your sleep. Candles are the best choice to bring fire into your bedroom, especially if your aim is to create a sensual atmosphere and enhance romaticism. Fire colors are red, bright yellow, orange, pink and purple. Dark tones of purple, red or orage are great choices for bed sheets. However, because they are strong colors, Feng Shui experts warn us to use them sparingly, and not to choose them as dominant chormatic tones for our bedroom's decor.

  3. Metal Colors

As a Feng Shui element, metal has the power to help you concentrate better. It brings clarity, precision and focus. You can bring its power into your bedroom by means of metallic interior decorations such as coin chains, bronze sculptures or other art forms. You can also go for pure white walls or pieces of furniture, or you can pick white, silvery grey or bronze bed sheets.

  4. Water Colors

Water is the most powerful Feng Shui element as it covers a great part of the Earth's surface, puts out fire, corodes most metals, and plays an important role in wood's life cycle. Water means renewal, infinite calm and rich energy sources. In other rooms of the house, Feng Shui experts recommend water fountains or aquariums, but in the bedroom you can use water representations in wall art, water sounds, and water colors (different shades of blue and black) for walls or bed sheets.

  5. Wood Colors

Feng Shui designers recommend to bring at least one wood element into the bedroom in order to benefit from this element's positive energy: luch, vitality, health, and abundance. You can either go for real wood furniture items, or you can pick wood decorations. As for the wood colors, they are dark brown and green.

Yin and Yang

Besides a good harmony between the five elements (water, wood, fire, earth and metal), a bedroom must also feature a balance of the Yin and Yang energies. Firstly Yin energy is represented by the moon and stands for the feminine gentleness, sensitivity, and cold energy, while Yang symbolizes the sun, and stands for masculine values like strength, clarity, warmth. In Feng Shui, Yin brings calm into your home. With a decoration yin, you will be more receptive, creative, relaxed and considerate, while a Yang home provides you with enthusiasm, confidence, speed, decision making power.

The bedroom is a place of rest, where yin soothing colors like blue and green must be present, featuring important elements such as the curtains, the carpets and the wall colors. Yin energy can also be found in the floral patterns or curved lines. A Yin atmosphere brings calm, but if there is an excess of Yin energy, the vulnerability to diseases may increase.

Avoid placing too many green plants in your bedroom (too much yang) or a water elements such as an aquarium or a décor fountain, because an excess of Yang energy can disrupt your sleep.

When you are stressed, you sleep in a more Yin bedroom because it will help you relax. When you run out of enthusiasm, more Yang energy is recommended for your bedroom.

However, you should always keep in mind that a bedroom that is too much Yin or too Yang is not favorable. In Feng Shui, the balance is essential. When the house is too Yin, you tend to always be worried, depressed, insecure, pessimistic. You feel the loneliness weighing down one you. A house that is too Yang will make you aggressive, impatient, frustrated, angry and violent.

You can also experience physical discomfort when you have an excess of Yin or Yang. When your house is too Yin, it can favor clammy skin, colds and flus, apathy, headaches, diarrhea, and swelling. A too Yang house can be associated with constipation, dry mouth, hypertension, dry skin and frequent minor accidents.
