Hygrometer to measure humidity level
Hygrometer | Device to measure humidity level - preventing molds
Fall season is now here and this is the time when I have to carefully store my clothes, shoes, electronic appliances and food in a perfect storage place with perfect humidity level to prevent it from molds.
Thankfully, I have found the perfect device to help me measuring the humidity level and this little device is called hygrometer. At the moment I'm using the analog hygrometer, and it costs me less than $20 to purchase this analog hygrometer and its calibration kit. It's the best investment of my life!
If you live in a humid house or have problems with molds, you've come to the right place!
On this page, you will find all the information about humidity level as well as hygrometer and dehumidifier. This winter, you can finally say "goodbye" to mold and mildew.
Guidelines for the minimum recommended humidity levels for houses
Why do we need to measure humidity level?
Measuring humidity of an environment is extremely important. Too much or too little humidity can affect many things giving typical symptoms or long-terms effects that can be hazardous for our health and goods' condition. Too much humidity means too much moisture which resulting in mildew and molds.
The increase in moisture usually happen during wet seasons (particularly during rainy and winter season). It is highly recommended to open the windows when the sun is shining to let the moisture out from our home and let the shine / dry humidity to enter our home. However, this can be difficult to achieve because when the weather is too cold, opening the windows will practically let more moisture entering our home, making it damper than before.
Hygrometer is a device used to measure humidity of a certain area. It measures up moisture content in the air. This instrument has been used for many decades and through many developments of shapes and material. Once it was an instrument with two channeled bulbs containing water, one bulb as a dry one while the other wrapped with absorbent material such as muslin. It soon evolved to an instrument called psychrometer. Psychrometer is the simplest form of hygrometer.
Today, the development of technology has made us more practical devices. It can be analog or digital. The analog hygrometer is the most commonly used today.
My Personal Recommendation of Analog Hygrometer & Calibration Kit
This little beauty is perfect for measuring humidity level for small scope of storage / place. As I always store my clothes / shoes / electronic devices in an airtight container, Western Humidors Analog Hygrometer is adequate.
Many people have difficulties in calibrating this instrument making it inconsistent in measuring the humidity level. I highly recommend Humidipack Calibration Kit. After calibrating my analog hygrometer using this kit, I always get accurate reading from my hygrometer.
How to Use Humidipak Calibration Kit
Other way to calibrate hygrometer - using saturated salt
One problem of measuring humidity with hygrometer is about the accuracy.
A hygrometer is not completely stable keeping its standard scaling. Its delicate design is what makes it inaccurate. Any means of impact can be the cause of its inaccuracy. That's why it must be calibrated regularly although some high quality hygrometer (mostly the digital hygrometer) might not need it.
Simplest way to calibrate hygrometer
The simplest way to get it calibrated is by soaking the hygrometer to a saturated salt. The mixture of pure salt and distilled water has the property to preserve approximately stable humidity in a closed container.
There are many kinds of salt solutions can be used such as Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride and Potassium Sulfate. Each of them has different results.
It also varies depending on the temperature around.
The hygrometer should be put inside a plastic bag or pressure cooker and sealed tightly before you put them inside the salt water. It can avoid the hygrometer being damaged by direct contact of the salt water. The calibration can take long time like 8 to 12 hours before reaching equilibrium which won't be 100% either. But it will definitely compensate with the ease of the calibration as other ways of calibration can be really complicated and costly.
My Top Pick of Digital Hygrometers
If you want to measure the humidity level in larger place such as bedroom, living room, bathroom, etc, I highly recommend the digital hygrometers.
Most of these pocket devices can also be used to measure the temperature. One weather instrument to measure two important things: humidity level and temperature. They are battery-operated and can be used to measure for indoor and outdoor areas.
The most advanced digital hygrometer uses remote sensor so you can simply take the remote sensor to the place where you want to get the reading from, and the wireless technology will transfer the humidity level data from the remote to the digital hygrometer. Easy, simple and accurate.
Below is my top pick of digital hygrometers:
Ambient Weather WS-0100
Affordable Thermometer - Hygrometer wireless device (up to 300 feet away) to measure outdoor and indoor humidity level! My friends own this and I'm planning to buy one as well.
The big screen main display gets the temperature and humidity level data from the wireless remote sensor that you can bring to the place where you want to get the reading from.
Want to get the reading from the garage? Simply bring the remote sensor to your garage, and this little device will display the data.
You can mount this device in your living room, it's small and battery-operated.
Note: You need to calibrate this Ambient Weather Digital Hygrometer using Ambient Weather Calibration Kit 75% or 33% .
Ambient Weather WS-0101 is replacing this Ambient Weather WS-0100.
Other Recommended Ambient Weather Devices / Calibration Kits
An essential kit to calibrate Ambient Weather Weather Station Hygrometers
An essential kit to calibrate Ambient Weather Weather Station Hygrometers
The newest Ambient Weather WS-0101, replacing Ambient Weather WS-0100.
The newest Ambient Weather device to measure temperature, dew point, barometer and humidity level
Big screen device with jumbo digits, another affordable digital thermometer and hygrometer to measure both indoor and outdoor areas.
Comes with the remote sensor, now you can get accurate reading of your spas, ponds, soil, hot tubs, garage, nursery room, greenhouse etc.
It can get the reading of the outdoor temperature range from -38 to 158deg F. Perfect little device!
Acu Rite Indoor Humidity Monitor
The cheapest digital hygrometer to measure humidity level indoor only. Easy to use, gives accurate level of reading (after calibration).
So is hygrometer enough to prevent molds and mildew?
Hygrometer is only an instrument to measure the humidity level. If you notice that the humidity level is high, and you want to keep large area / room of your home / workplace dry, you need dehumidifier.
Dehumidifier will absorb the moisture from the air and help to keep the area / room dry.
At the moment, I use dehumidifier in my bathroom. I only turn it on when someone's taking a hot / warm shower to absorb the hot steam.
Please remember that a dehumidifier uses a lot of electricity, so if you don't want to pay higher bills during winter / rainy season, I strongly suggest you to turn it on only when you need it the most.
My top pick of the most affordable yet recommended dehumidifier:
Perfect for absorbing moisture for rooms up to 200 square feet. It can removes up to 46 pints of water every 24 hours, stored in a 5-1/2-liter water tank.
It has two fan settings (both low and high) and soft touch electronic control panel. Humidity settings: continuous or 50-, 60-, 70-, or 80-percent.
Combined with the UV light, this dehumidifier sanitizes the room by eliminating germs and bacteria.
Measurement: 8-1/4 by 16-1/7 by 21-1/2 inches
Do you have electronic devices? I highly recommend you to store them in a dry box to prevent it from mildew and molds.
