I Love Red

Updated on January 27, 2014

Passion for red

I love red. It's the most passionate, sensual colour of all. It's full of individuality, it screams of courage and desire. It tempts, energizes, seduces. I love color red. And there are at least five reasons why.

1. Red tulips

Did you know...

...that tulips are the only flowers that continue to grow after being cut?

...that Holland produces over 3 billion tulip bulbs per year?

...that during the Dutch tulip mania in 17th century some bulbs were sold for 10 times the annual pay of a skilled craftsman?

2. Red strawberries

Strawberries and me

My parents are keen gardeners and they've had an allotment full of strawberry bushes for as long as I can remember. Where I lived, the strawberry season fell in June. For the weeks approaching, we were impatiently waiting for this first summer fruit to arrive. Finally, the first handful was there, followed inevitably by the big fight with my sisters to establish who would taste the first strawberry of the year. Now that I think about it, this was a doubtful honour, since the first berry was usually palish and not very sweet, having been picked as soon as it developed any shade of pinkness instead of the glorious red, but still, after a year of fasting, that was something. Few more weeks would pass and finally daily harvest would reach the stage when everyone could eat until their bellies burst and suddenly - we couldn't even look at strawberries anymore. My mum would start making preserves then, not wanting the bounty to waste. Somehow all the impatient waiting was completely forgotten and strawberries were nothing special anymore. Finally the red river of fruit would wane to a tiny trickle...

...and so another year of waiting would begin.

Now, am I wrong suspecting that you have a very similar story to tell?

3. Red Hot Chili Peppers

Chili facts

- the smaller your chili, the hotter it is

- red chilis are hotter than green chilis, dried chilis are hotter than fresh chilis

- seeds and inner membranes are the hottest part, so remove them if you want your dish milder

- chili juice and fumes can cause irritation to eye and skin, so be careful when handling

- chili hotness is not soluble in water, so no amount of water-based drink will soothe the pain. Drink some milk instead, or a spoonful of oil of any kind

Little Ladybug Story

My Ladybird Story

I have to confess something.

When I was a child, I brought death to innumerable ladybirds by... teaching them to swim. That is, throwing them into the biggest puddle I could find and leaving them there to find their way out.

I suppose I was convinced I'm doing them a big favour.

Some of the ladybirds may have survived.

5. Red dresses

Dear Ladies

As I'm sure all the gentlemen will agree, a red dress is the sexiest garment a woman can wear (apart, possibly, from no garment at all). I interviewed my male friends and they all admitted that a woman in red is somehow more desirable.

Keep that in mind when shopping! Forget fashion advisers, red dress is timeless.

Unfortunately it is also extremely difficult to find a really nice public domain red dress picture, that's why you're getting this lovely red rose instead. Hope you don't mind?

Yes, I do. Strawberries are my favourite fruit...and cherries. Both red. I live in Canterbury New Zealand and our football teams the Crusaders and Canterbury wear red and black.

I love the color red too. I learned some new things on this lens. I had no idea you could make wine from tulips or that they continue to grow after being cut. My mom absolutely loves tulips.

Thank you for sharing this great lens

Everyday is a learning day, I never knew you could make wine out of tulips (mind you I don't drink but still . . . ) Did you know that piri piri just means hot hot as in asia they emphasise things by repeating the word so a piri piri chilli is a hot hot one! Loved all of this especially the colour! Great fun. With thanks and appreciation (again). Cathi x

Great idea for a lens because I also feel as though red doesn't get enough respect. But I may be biased since my sailboat is red.
