Outdoor Torches for Patio Ambiance

Updated on May 20, 2013

Outdoor Torches for Lighting, Fun and Keeping the Bugs at Bay

When we moved and ended up with a gorgeous backyard, I knew I was gonna need something to make it feel cozy. Outdoor torches are great for creating atmosphere and ambiance to my patio and deck areas.

I've tried almost every kind on the market over the years but the ones included here are the type and design that works best for my intentions.

I thought I would share some of my favorites and the reasons they are my favorites. I am hoping this information will help you when you start shopping for outdoor torches. You'll know what to look for and what to avoid while decking out your outdoor space for the season.

Use Outdoor Torches Year after Year

An Investment

The only kind of torch I will use now, are those made of all metal -- pole. fuel container and supports. These pose less of a chance of starting a fire than their bamboo or wood cousins.

Most of this style outdoor torches are made of powder coated steel to resist corrosion. They can stay out in the inclement weather. The ground stakes are sturdy and usually made in a lowercase "h" fashion allowing you to have a double stake stabilizing it into the ground.

Make sure when looking at outdoor torches to purchase that you find one that comes with a snuf cap. You will avoid burning yourself if you put the flame out with a snuf cap attached to the torch.

These type of outdoor torches are made to use year and year with just simple cleaning and re-filling of the fuel containers. No need to through them away like the bamboo disposable torches. I look at them as an investment. We just got a new house. We purchased torches for the patio area and will leave them up until winter. We'll haul them back out next spring and enjoy the light and ambiance the outdoor torches provide.

The pineapple has been a symbol for "welcome" for ions. What could be more perfect when family and friends join you for an outdoor party -- welcome them with the pineapple symbol.

These pineapple outdoor torches are great for around the patio or deck. The fuel can is enclosed in the pineapple shape of the body. All metal construction makes them durable. They will last for years.

72" (6 ft) is a great height for outdoor torches. Again, these are made metal (much safer than bamboo wood) -- can, pole and snuffer.

The finish is bronze so it will go with any decor. Each fuel can holds18 oz. and will burn 6 to 8 hours.

Remember...

Do not place outdoor torches near trees, low hanging branches or any combustible material.

Never leave outdoor torches unattended.

This set of 6 tiki torches are gorgeous. The fuel can looks like terracotta in a mosaic design.

They are much safer than bamboo or wood. We use BiteFighter torch fuel and I swear it helps with the mosquitoes.

Fire Hazard

Traditional Bamboo outdoor torches can be a fire risk.

All metal, powder coated outdoor torches are much less likely to catch fire.

Bamboo Outdoor Torches Post Safety Risk

Wood Burns

Tradition outdoor torches made of bamboo or similar wood have gotten some negative press and manufacturer recalls due to the fact that they can pose a safety risk. In Canada, test were conducted by the Ontario Fire Marshall that concluded the bamboo torches posed a "significant risk to consumers".

Among other things, the pole can crack causing the fire to fall over onto anything in its path, the support pole can catch fire wreaking havoc and pieces that have caught fire can break off and ignite anything it touches. In addition, the bamboo surrounding the fuel container can inadvertently absorb some of the fuel. When lit, the bamboo can catch fire.

This torch is 30" high and perfect for attaching to a deck railing where the ambient lighting of a tiki torch is welcome.

The bracket clamps safely and securely to your deck railing! This is an awesome alternative to outdoor torches that have to be staked in the ground. Anyone with a deck can still enjoy the flickering light from a torch by using this style of torch.

Anywhere Outdoor Torches - Sleek, Stainless Steel Design

Anywhere Garden Torch - Stainless Steel Cone Shape Garden Torch (2 pack)
Anywhere Garden Torch - Stainless Steel Cone Shape Garden Torch (2 pack)

These are gorgeous stainless steel, conical style torches that will add sophistication and elegance to your patio, deck or yard.

These are my personal favorite. I love to mix styles and eras in my designs. These remind me of modern design but also of something that would have come out in the 50's or 60's as "futuristic". How cool is that?

All Kinds of Outdoor Torches

Take a look at your outdoor space. Do you need torches that go into the ground? on a deck railing? sits on a table? All those and more are on the market.

Just stay away from the bamboo and wood outdoor choices (if you plan to burn them) due to being a safety hazard.

Good Luck! I hope you are as happy with your choice in outdoor torches as I am!

But it's not just a regular hat. Looks like a Vancouver hat to me, and I think that I might be the closeot creature on the planet wait. New lil' possum just spilled the catfood bowl. He might be cooler.

Had to stop back by this wonderful page on outdoor torches to give it some Angel Dust. Getting ready to open up my deck for it's spring décor and know a torch or two would be a great addition this year.

Oh, I love outdoor torches! Not only do they ad to the ambiance, but some help keep insects/mosquitoes away

My deck has outdoor lighting but I definitely think a torch or two for the corners would be perfect. What a nice accent that would make!

Outdoor torches are perfect for entertaining in the summer. The effect of the lighting is fantastic. Thanks for the warning about the bamboo and wood versions, too.
