Whether you're looking for glow in the dark décor, starry lights or planetary art work, look no further. This theme is perfect for both boys and girls, and can be educational as well as looking truly special. I know for sure - I learned all about the constellations and the planets from the outer space décor I had when I was young!
Drawing inspiration from the space-age bedroom I had as a kid, I've collected all the best bedroom decor ideas for this theme on the net right here for you to browse. I hope you find some décor which is perfect for you! Let's take a look.
Outer Space Bedding Sets
The first thing you will need is a good set of bedding to ground the theme - the bed is the first thing people look to when they enter the room, so it is where you set the tone! You don't necessarily have to do anything special - if the rest of the room is packed with space age decor a simple set of black or navy blue sheets will do the trick. If you want to do a little more, however, there are some wonderful bedding sets out there.
I'm always a fan of designs that break stereotypes If you want some space age bedding that isn't blue, blue and more blue, this Space Rocket bedding is definitely worth checking out. This sweet and subtly colorful kids bedding collection is decorated with cute cartoon rockets and comes with a comforter, a matching sham, a flat sheet and fitted sheet set, and a standard size pillowcase. Everything you could need for space-age dreams! This bedding would look especially great on a silver metal bed frame.
I love the varied scatter of planets, stars and space shuttled on this bedding, as well as the rich and deep navy blue colors, and I'm sure it'd look fantastic in an outer space bedroom. This great set includes a comforter, a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, a bedskirt, a pillowcase and a matching pillow sham. I think it would fit in great with one of the starry night-sky producing laser lights I've featured below.
For older kids, teens and even adults, the bedding on the right is perfect to be the centerpiece of your room. With a real image print from deep space, it has a bold and mature feeling that brings depth and warmth to a room and really brings home the majesty of outer space.
Pair this incredible duvet with black, navy blue or white sheets, and maybe one of the pillows from below, and you are good to go.
Outer Space Throw Pillows and Cushion
An easy way to jazz up your bed or your couch or your floor, if you are like me) is with some sweet rocket or planet themed throw pillows or cushions. For little kids, you can even pick up some cute cushions with adorable rocket decorations, like the cuddly rocket ship decorative cushion number on the right. I've featured more of my favorite space age pillows below.
For older galactic residents, you can get some realistic print pillows out there. I like the idea of having decorative pillow cushions for all 8 planets, the sun and the moon - if you can fit them on your bed that is! Above is a great one to get you started, a moon shaped and decorated pillow available on Etsy. It's very unique!
NASA have taken some truly stunning photos of the black from the Hubble Space Telescope and the like, and since it is all public domain many of these breath-taking images have made their way on to art prints, t-shirts and even bedding. Galaxy print pillows are extremely common, and all of them are just marvelous in their beauty. My favorite is the Blue Galaxy pillow on the right. Really makes you feel quite small, doesn't it? In a good way, though.
Home made galaxy decorated pillows. Yep, you heard me right. See that gorgeous nebula print cushion in the video above? You can make it yourself, often for a fraction of the price of mass-produced pillows. It's a wonderful way to create personalized and unique decorations for your bedroom, as you have complete control over the design. It's not as hard as it looks either!
Outer Space Themed Rugs
Bring the solar system into your outer space themed bedroom with this cool solar system themed rug. as well as looking amazing and really colorful, this high quality rug is completely fire retardant for extra safety. Plus it's educational! Just don't forget to point out that Pluto isn't a planet anymore. Sadly it looks like the makers of space themed décor have a lot of updating to do! There's load of other rugs to choose from - check them out.
Continuing my quest to cover everyone's rooms with random moon themed bits of bedroom decor, why not pick up the stunning moon print circular area rug on the right to go with your moon pillow? I love the colors on this piece, they are so gentle and inspiring - perfect for the Spring. It also doubles as a picnic mat, so it's versatile - you can take it out when you go star-gazing and take a few sandwiches with you.
Outer space Wall Decorations - Outer Space Posters
There are lots of great space themed wall posters for you to decorate your room with, which double as being educational! You certainly wont get that with most other bedroom themes. I had one with all the constellations on it in my space age bedroom, stuck to the back of my door, and I can still remember what all of the constellations of the zodiac look like!
Like with the bedding and pillows, there are hundreds of real shots from the Hubble Telescope you can get out there, and the real majesty of space can eclipse any other space themed artwork. Be sure to find the ones that take your breath away! For example, I adore the amazing shot of the nebula above, available on Amazon.
Glow in The Dark Stars
My favorite memory of my old bedroom was the glow in the dark starry sky that I created across my ceiling and walls. You can even recreate your favorite constellations, like your star sign, on the walls! If you like the sound of that, you'll definitely need some glow in the dark stars to decorate your walls with. This is a great pack of 700 which recharge when exposed to light, so you'll never run out of glow!
If you are feeling a little more adventurous in your wall decorating and instead to give the room a new lick of paint, you can paint your own outer space mural! Here's a great guide to painting little twinkling stars on the wall. Unlike in the video, I would recommend not using a black base for the entire wall as it will make the room look small, but this would look equally good on a navy blue background, or as a unique mural for one wall of the room. A similar, but more feminine effect can be achieved by mixing a healthy supply of silver glitter into your basic wall paint.
As with the pillow cases, it isn't actually that hard to get a realistic and beautiful nebula style look onto quite a lot of things, including canvases. So if you want some professional, incredible looking canvas art for your bedroom, you don't need to pay a fortune for it, plus the end result will be completely unique to you. Just follow the video tutorial above, and create your own stellar masterpiece!
Rather than going out and buying a whole load of new furniture, why not just revamp your old bed frame and chest of drawers? There are plenty of guides online to painting furniture of all materials and making them look brand new again. I recommend going for a silver, metallic look, a navy blue look, or going all white.
Outer Space Lamps and Lighting
There's a great range of sci-fi lighting for an outer space themed bedroom. Here is one of my favorites, a high quality lamp shaped like a space ship with cool astronauts hanging down from it. It's certainly not cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for both in terms of quality and sheer unique novelty. Its sure to look fantastic, and bound to be the envy of all your child's friends.
Here's something I wish I'd had in my room as a kid but didn't think of at the time. Plasma balls like this one are a really cool sci-fi gift for anyone looking to set up an outer space or sci-fi bedroom. Touch the glass and see bolts of light shoot up and meet your fingers! Kids are sure to love this great bedroom accessory, and it makes really interesting patterns appear on the wall when the lights are off.
If you've ever ready any of my other bedroom decorating guides, you'll know that I'm crazy about string lights. They are a beautiful way of adding a feminine touch to any room, as well as a soft glow in the evening that will help easy you to sleep in a way that harsh ceiling lights and bright lamps wont. Plain string lights work perfectly for a galaxy themed bedroom, as from a distance they look like twinkling little stars, but if you want something a little more elaborate, while not make some star shaped lights by following the guide above?
Outer Space Themed Accessories
Finally, you'll need to finish off your room with some accessories, those little subtle bits and pieces that tie a room together and make it look homely. For kids, the cartoon planet clock above is a great place to start, and fits in perfectly with all of the other cartoon style decor that I have included on this page.
Sometimes the obvious ideas are the ones most easily overlooked, which is why I have to mention how much a telescope is a must-have accessory for any space themed bedroom. Sadly they don't make the one I had any more, but this one is a best seller with great reviews and a reasonable price.
Last but not least, why not save a bit of money by making your own outer space themed bedroom décor accessories? Above is a video featuring a simple project to get your started - a model solar system! These planets can be hung from the ceiling, used as a nursery mobile, or even tied to a light fixture.
Girls of all ages are going to love this one, and it is an easy thing you can make at home out of spare mason jars. Above is an amazing guide to creating glittery, colorful nebula-in-a-jar ornaments that you can use to add color and flair to your desk and bedroom surfaces. You can even substitute glow in the dark materials for the insides and marvel at the beauty of the universe in the dead of night, how it is meant to be.
