Cover your furniture during winter to keep it in better shape and cleaner for the summer

When we shop for our favorite patio furniture to relax in over the summer, we don't often think of what we will do with it in the wintertime. However, unless you live on a big estate or have a pool house, the lovely furniture and accessories that you have have on your patio or deck will need protection in the winter.

Where I live our winter gets lots of slush, rain, wind and snow which means that our wrought iron patio set needs to be covered because it can rust. Although it is heavy enough that the wind can't blow it away, the umbrella gets taken into our house, and we have to secure our barbeque to the side of our house.

It is well worth the price of a couple of patio covers to keep your outdoor furniture in great shape for next year and the years to come. This page is a jumping off point to see the best covers for your furniture. Click through any of the links for exact dimensions, warranties and more information.

Most patio covers come in brown, gray or khaki. That is because people know that they will get dirty and don't buy them for the color. However, you can buy them one at a time or in sets, and several of them will cover an entire set of furniture. These covers are meant to protect your outdoor furniture, get rained on and snowed on. You can wash them in the spring, but check to make sure that they are weatherproofed and how long the weatherproofing lasts.

If you cover properly outside, you don't need to store it inside

For most people covering their furniture outdoors alleviates the need to find storage for it indoors. These covers work well with round tables. As you can see there are several different styles of covers, and your climate will affect your decision. If you live in a rainy climate, then you do not need to worry about snow.

Keeping BBQs and Patio Heaters Safe

Barbeques and patio heaters need to stay free from rust, dust, mold and mildew. Wind, snow and rain can damage them and wear them out much more quickly than normal. Another issue with these outdoor appliances is that they do not weigh very much, so that wind can knock them down or blow them away causing even more damage.

If you cannot bring these items under shelter inside a garage, then the next best thing is to secure them to your home under a patio awning. You can use bungee cords to tie them up securely. You can also bunch your furniture and appliances together and cover them together.

Patio Furniture Covers for Each Type of Furniture

You can buy individual chair and furniture covers that are shaped for each piece. These work well to protect these items from banging into each other as well as outdoor elements. Buying individual covers is a better choice in a windy location or if you own higher end pieces.

Covers do not come equally; some are tougher than others

These are great ideas and useful videos. I will admit I'm a little frustrated that I didn't think of this last winter--of course, living in southern California it doesn't usually matter, ha! Great up thanks for sharing!

@Nell It does make cleaning easier. Although spiders do still manage to get in and make a home sometimes.

@Pawpaw Unless you really don't care about the condition of the outdoor furniture or your climate doesn't need it, it makes a huge difference in the longevity.

@esmonaco We are in Ohio, and cover our grill and leave it outside. Our basement isn't that big and there is no room for extra furniture. Our metal furniture needs a cover though.

We also get a lot of bad weather in the winter, as we live in Western New York. I cover out patio table and other lawn chairs with a tarp and tie them down. The cushions and table chairs I store in the basement. I always wanted to make the investment in these covers, but have not spent the money yet. Thanks for all of the ideas :)
