Pellet Stove Safety Gates

Updated on November 26, 2012

Pellet Stove Safety

Your pellet stove keeps your family warm during the winter - something you've come expect. Unfortunately, people, especially young kids and even your pets, can get hurt around the pellet stove. When it comes to pellet stove safety, what steps are you taking to keep your family and pets safe?

Think about it, sometimes it's a rowdy kid running by the pellet stove that trips and falls or a curious family critter that doesn't seem to learn his lesson and keeps getting too close for comfort. Before you know it, a serious bump on the head or a burn ensues. Fortunately for you, there are two easy and affordable ways to keep your family, pets included, safe.

First, talk to your kids and their friends when they come over. Without scaring them sit them down and explain to them that the pellet stove is very hot and shouldn't be touched. Tell your kids and their friends that because you care about them you don't want to see them get hurt. Explain to them that touching, playing around, or running by the pellet stove is not okay for their sakes. Give them a reminder if needed.

Secondly, install a pellet stove safety gate, often called hearth gates. These are easy to assemble and can be manipulated into the right shape to fit around your pellet stove. Pellet stove safety gates have come a long way. Besides being designed for safety, they are designed for convenient access to the pellet stove and blend nicely into the décor of the house.

Any old safety gate won't due. Pellet stove safety gates are made to withstand the heat from your pellet stove. They are made from fireproof materials that keep from getting hot. Many come with access doors that have child-proof latches that can be easily opened by an adult. Pellet stove safety gates are sturdy and won't tip over. The bars are close together to keep curious kids from sticking limbs through or getting their heads stuck.

Below are 3 pellet stove safety gates to choose from.

Pellet Stove Maintenance and Usage Guide

Kidco Auto Close Hearth Gate in Black

Baby-proofing your pellet stove with this hearth gate is easy. Set up the safety gate around the perimeter of your pellet stove to keep your kids and pets safe. Hassle-free adult access to the stove is a snap with the gates hold-open button.

The gate stays closed when you want it to with its magnetic locking system. Don't worry about whether or not you left the gate open because the magnets will automatically close the door when the hold-open button isn't being pressed.

The joints of this pellet stove safety gate are easy to adjust and lock into place for quick assembly. The safety gate comes with wall mountable hardware that can easily be adjusted or released for removal.

@AstroGremlin: That sounds like a scary situation to me. My props go to your mom!

My little sister caught her petticoats on fire walking by a gas fireplace with a broken glass front. My mom rolled her out before she got burned, although my mom's hands got burned. I got an aluminum foil star for calling mom in time. I was 5.

I absolutely love using pellet stoves except I do get quite nervous when there are little kids around. I had no idea that you could even buy a safety gate for the stove. I usually just monitor the stove extremely closely. Thanks for sharing!
