Pillowcases and Pillow Protectors

Updated on June 14, 2012

Why you MUST consider Pillowcases and Pillow Protectors

If you have gone to the expense of purchasing good quality pillows, for either functional, personal, aesthetic or medical reasons, you will probably want to care for them properly. In addition to airing your bedding, the addition of pillow protectors and pillow cases can increase the life of your pillows.

A pillowcase used to be the outer protection for a pillow, but these days, tends to be more of an aesthetic addition since matching bed linen has become a priority.

A pillow protector is now used to protect pillows and the pillow case provides the beautifying element.

Why Do Pillows Require Protection?

Something to consider...

Quite simply, a pillow has the ability to collect an astonishing amount of dirt and oil from your head and face, as well as providing a safe harbour for moisture, dust, mould and bacteria.

Now you could be forever laundering your pillows, or take a short cut and use a pillow protector and launder it instead. You can buy lovely, thick, quilted, pillow protectors these days which do a very good job of protecting pillows from a goodly amount of what our heads and faces naturally shed. They can absorb moisture as well and this can help your save your pillow from doing so. Look for pillow protectors which are made from good quality fabric with a high thread count.

Some handy tips for your Pillows

You need to make sure you purchase pillow protectors which are the correct size for your pillows so that they do their job properly. A handy tip is to purchase double the amount of protectors you need, so that one can be on the pillow while the other is being laundered. This way, frequent and regular laundering can occur which will keep your pillows fresher for longer. The pillows will also last longer as well, because they will have been adequately protected and cared for during the course of their natural life. The less actual laundering of the pillow itself, will result in a longer pillow life.

What about Pillowcases

This is the fabric which your head and face will be in contact with and while it used to be a functional relationship, in terms of protecting your pillow, it now has a mostly decorative purpose. Again, you just choose the size that matches your pillows. Pillowcases most often come with sheet sets and comforter sets so that you bed linen is coordinated. They can though, be purchased separately of course and many people will purchase sets of white pillowcases, or coloured ones, so they can have a fresh pillowcase every single day. The most decorative will have a ruffle around the edge.

This combination will provide the ultimate in softness. It can be expensive though. The best pillowcases will be made from Egyptian cotton with a high thread count (number of threads, horizontal and vertical per square inch) and anything over 1,000 is considered good.
