Pink flamingos everywhere

Updated on September 24, 2014

Flamingo's adorn just about everything

This pretty little flamingo is a proud resident on my Christmas Tree. He is one of my favorite ornaments and is always in a place of honor. He's not the only flamingo we have. We travel in Vintage Trailers and no self-respecting vintage trailerite would be caught without one.

The story goes way beyond that. For many years, lawns were decorated with these lovely birds. What was it about these birds that captured the attention of a generation? Considered tacky by some, sales are still brisk.

Flamingo's have always captured attention but then, what pink bird wouldn't?

Why are flamingo's pink? - Smithsonian discussion

The Original Pink Flamingos: Splendor on the Grass - Din Featherstone shares his story

Usually I do not use product descriptions when it's just as easy to rewrite. However, this is clever and funny and I doubt I could have done a better job.

"In 1957, Don Featherstone sculptured the first three-dimensional pink plastic flamingo, thereby making affordable bad taste accessible to the American public"--from Pink Flamingos. This is the tale of a wonderful bird, named by his creator phoenicopteris rubber plasticus; a new avian species, now known to all as "Pink Plastic Flamingo." The more than one hundred pictures and the text in this volume are the result of Featherstone's request that adoring owners of the pink birds send original photographs that demonstrate their affection for phoenicopteris on its 40th birthday in 1997. An overwhelming response included such masterpieces as: "Biker Birds," "What a Pear," "The Wedding Party," "Anyone for Bridge," "Purple Passion," "Beachcombers," and the sweetly romantic "Flamingo Honeymoon." If you're a believer, or even an skeptic, take a look, see for yourself. This book is one of a kind, the documentation of American genius, homage to an icon, or, perhaps, a rare opportunity to observe a culturally tolerated symbol of taste gone awry. It's great fun!"

If you read the description, this might just be a must-have.

Amazing Flamingos

Guess what I'm taking to the next Vintage Trailer Rally - Yes, it's tacky! Don't you love it?

Would you put a pair of pink plastic flamingos in your yard?

I have an excuse because our trailers are older. Mine is a 1959 and was built at the height of the flamingo craze but I have come to appreciate them on my own.

So would you decorate with flamingos?

Flamingo's anyone

There are so many ways to satisfy the flamingo craving. Here are a few more.

This is a fun game for the kids to play

We had a very good time at one Vintage Trailer Rally. We bought it for the adults to play but the kids took over and played the rest of the day.

What do you think of the flamingos?

I like them. I've had a modernistic version in my garden for a time. I found a pair of pink flamingo earrings in Mexico for a friend once. I'd love to visit Florida and see some there.

I really wish I could rock some pink flamingos in my front yard, but Excessive Displays of Personality are frowned upon on my street, so they have to hang out in the backyard with the gnomes and the odd garden container choices ;)

I think they're fun, but since I live in Florida, I don't have to put them in my yard. I have plenty of birds wandering through already.

Maybe I can talk you into putting a link in here to my eHow article on How to Fundraise with Pink Flamingoes.

This new pink theme really makes them pop! My aunt had a series of unfortunate things happen to her patio garden so in frustration she went out and got pink flamingos (something she would normally consider very low brow). Since then it's become a theme. I think they're fun!
