Polypropylene Rugs ... One Tough Rug

Updated on January 27, 2015

Indoor or Outdoor, Polypropylene Rugs are available in may styles, colors & sizes.

Polypropylene Rugs are an excellent value and have made it possible for everyone to have area rugs in their home.

Due to the inexpensive manufacturing process of this man made fiber. Polypropylene also know as olefin is a synthetic material used in rugs.

They started out manufacturing rugs for outdoors due to the moisture repelling qualities. Water just seems to roll right off of this fabric. Polypropylene rugs are great choices for high traffic areas in homes and are easy to clean.

I have a braided polypropylene rug I purchased over 8 years ago in my mud room. Being in the heart of our home with daily traffic and shoes being wiped on it daily, and two dogs, it gets dirty, really dirty. All I have to do is hose it down and add a little mild detergent, scrub it and rinse. And it doesn't even take long to dry, due to the Polypropylene's water repellent qualities.

Polypropylene Rugs come in a variety of sizes, colors, patterns and are widely available, so finding that perfect rug for your room will be easy. And you will not only love the way they look, but how easy they are to take care of.

What is Polypropylene?

Polypropylene is a type of thermoplastic polymer resin. Polypropylene is used in our households on a daily basis in all types of things. You will find polypropylene in everything from toys, automobiles, paper, upholstery, lab equipment, carpets, rugs and so much more. The beauty of polypropylene is that it does not absorb water which cause mold and bacteria. Easy to clean and dries quickly. It is light, flexible and strong. When used in carpets it makes the fibers stronger than traditional materials used and able to withstand the sun lights damaging UV rays making it able to be used outdoors as well as in.

How to Clean a Polypropylene Rug?

A polypropylene rug can last years with proper care.

Polypropylene rugs are great to use for those high traffic because of the ease of maintenance. Let me run down the steps to keep your polypropylene rug looking like new.

Vacuum

Vacuum the regularly. This is important and may seem obvious to most. But vacuuming your rugs removes all loose dirt. The goal is to avoid this dirt from getting down into the fibers of the carpet where it will be impossible to remove. So vacuum weekly.

Spot Clean

You will want to remove those spots which occur right away. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water, add a small amount of dish detergent. Take a sponge or brush dip into soapy water and rub gently to moisten and agitate the spot. Take a white cotton towel or cloth and dab to remove the excess water.

Cleaning the entire rug

Vacuum to remove all loose dirt and grit. Take the rug outside on a flat surface, concrete is best. Hose it down. Yep that's right, just hose it down t completely wet the rug. Spray the rug with fantastic, 409 or another all purpose grease cutting cleaning. You can use dish detergent as well. Spray the entire rug with the cleaner and brush it into the rug. Hose the whole rug down again until the water runs clear. Make sure to get all the soap out. Any soap left in the rug will become an attractant to dirt and your rug will get dirty quickly. So be sure to rinse all soap out of your rug. Let the rug dry in the sun for a few hours.
