Pyrex Storage and Cookware

Updated on June 23, 2013

Why I Love Using My Pyrex Dishes!

When it comes to cooking and roasting I just love to use my Pyrex cookware. I have an electric fan oven and using my glass cookware means I can fit more in the oven. This way I make the most of the power and cook several things at once! If you have a roasting pan it usually takes up the whole shelf whereas using the glass oblong dishes it is possible to fit three different dishes at once on one shelf.

Take for example, this weekend we had my sister-in-law and her husband around for dinner. It is winter in New Zealand and weâd had a series of wild storms so we were fully expecting power cuts. It was particularly important to get the most out of the cooking time.

The dish I made requires marinating and these glass dishes have a plastic lid so it means the garlic doesnât permeate the air! While Iâm referring to one occasion here I actually use my dishes whenever I do a roast ~ summer or winter.

My Favorite Recipe

Spicy Beef

This is my favorite recipe for entertaining. While the meat is one of the most expensive cuts the preparation time required is negligible. This in turn allows for time to prepare other dishes or getting the house ready for your guests...or maybe time to sit and relax a while.

It is a delicious dish and because you are using a whole fillet steak you are bound to cater for all tastes of meat lovers. When I say that I mean those that like rare, medium or cremated! Those that like a well done steak just get the thinner ends!

Here are the ingredients you will need: whole fillet steak, herbs and runny honey. And...

...of course you'll need your Pyrex dish with plastic lid!

This set has two oblong dishes as well as three round dishes. I only have the oblong dishes in the glassware (with white lids) but I do own several other older Pyrex casserole dishes which I love to use. I've even got one that was given to me when I went flatting and that was about forty years ago! It shows they are long lasting dishes...and that's for sure.

Made in the USA and there is a two year warranty.

The benefits are:

  • The dishes are easy to clean
  • Glass is non porous which makes it a hygienic option...it does not retain smells.
  • The dishes are heat resistant and can be used in both the microwave and oven.
  • They can be used in the freezer and as storage in your pantry...more hygienic than plastic.
  • Can be used for table service.
  • Add the plastic lid to keep left overs in the fridge.
  • Can be cleaned in the dishwasher...always use the top shelves of the dishwasher for the plastic lids.

Rub the meat with herbs
Rub the meat with herbs

I usually use fresh herbs but on this occasion I bought a tube of chopped garlic, basil and bell peppers. You can use whatever herbs and spices you like. Each time will be different.

Place the meat in your glass cooking dish. Rub the herbs on both sides of the fillet and drizzle with the runny honey. Place the plastic lid on your dish and leave to marinate for three to four hours. The longer the better really.

The plastic lid will keep the kitchen free of the garlic smell and will keep your meat free of flies and insects. No need for cling wrap.

Use in the microwave and oven.

One of the great things about Pyrex dishes is that you can use them in the microwave and oven. By the time I was well on the way to making my dinner my husband requested roast pumpkin. Well, roasting pumpkin takes longer than the time I had left.

With this cookware it's no problem!

I placed the pumpkin in the glass cookware and into the microwave for a few minutes to quicken the baking process. I was then able to add the pumpkin to the oven while baking the dessert ~ Queen of Puddings.

The evening went well

All of the beef was eaten...no need to store in the fridge with the lid! The truss tomatoes, pumpkin, beans and potatoes were all gone.

And no left over Queen of Puddings either.

We watched the All Blacks beat France and then watched Australia play the British Lions while we finished with cheese and biscuits.

And the dishes are in the dishwasher...no hassle!

A good size roasting dish that is suitable for casseroles too. Doesn't come with a lid.

I prefer glass measuring jugs as it is easier to see the measurements and levels. While you can use in the dishwasher you should alternately hand wash as over time the measures are likely to disappear.

I heart my pyrex! My cats have comandeered my pie plate - it's their favorite water dish. I am going to have to get a new one :) Loved your lens!

I don't have any Pyrex cookware but have used them at other people's houses. They are nice and look so much better than metal pans!
