Queen Bed Frame Guide

Updated on October 6, 2014

Wood and metal frames for queen beds

The popularity of queen beds is also due to the ease of making the bed.and washing the linens is a lot easier than for example a king bed.

There is also a cost consideration. A bed frame of queen 60 x 80 inch size can be found for a very good price compared to bigger beds.

What type of queen size bed frame should you choose? Depends on what you intend to put on it. A box spring mattress can use almost any type of bed frame (even a platform frame, or just attached legs IKEA style). With a foam mattress you will often want a wooden frame with lattice support or full platform (or at least a foundation mattress).

Storage Bed Frames - Queen Size - Queen beds with storage

Since the 60x80 bed size is a favorite with single or small space households then a queen bed frame with storage makes a lot of sense. A storage bed is a smart way to maximize the space that a bed frame of queen size or bigger takes up.

Personally, I also like the way a wood storage bed becomes much more of a piece of furniture than just a mattress frame.

All of a sudden, you have a lot more visible wood which you can match to your other bedroom furnishings and use to style your room.

A queen bed with storage is wide enough to usually have compartments that you can access from both sides. Narrower beds will often only have a trundle compartment available from one side.

My favorite is the captain design which really makes an impression as a central piece of furniture in the bedroom and which often has ample storage space in drawers.

Wood is the material of choice for most bed frames. Many are made from pressed wood composites with just a outer layer of wood finish, while more exclusive beds can be found of qenuine wood such as a mahogany, cherry or solid oak bed frames.

Metal Queen Bed Frame

Most queen metal frames are very cheap and basically only provide a simple support system for the mattress. If you want a queen bed frame that is almost invisible once mounted, the a simple metal frame is the right choice.

Many also like the classic metal queen bed frame which has head and foot frame, such as the one above by Fashion Bed Group

A platform bed frame is exactly what it sounds like: a platform on which to lay whatever mattress you have, some call it a invisible bed frame. Many people consider the platform to be the best queen size bed frame type.

If you want a bed with a headboard, and perhaps even a foot board, then I suggest you choose a queen platform bed frame.

Queen Bed Frame Size

The width of a queen bed frame can be flush with the mattress or extend any number of inches depending on what type of bed frame you choose. Most simple metal bed frames will be flush since they essentially just provide a raiser from the floor and often with wheels of some sort.

Most metal bed frames take little space, even with a head section attached.

Queen Size Bed Dimensions

Q: What is the size of a queen bed?

A: US queen bed dimension = 60Ã80 inches

A Queen bed-frame will normally be made to the 60x80 (152 x 203cm).standard dimensions. If you buy a metal bed frame, then these are often sold as a single unit for all sizes and you will be able to adjust it to the mattress size you have.

The dimensions of a queen size bed allows enough space for two adults and is a logical choice for anyone living in a flat, condo, bungalow or other small home with somewhat limited space. A Queen bed is also the ultimate choice for single person comfort.

There is also a California Queen Bed with slightly longer dimensions of 60 x 84 inches. Most queen bed undercarriages will accommodate a Calif Queen mattress (as long as they don't have foot-board attached. More info about bed sizes at Wikipedia.

Most wood frames will be called platform beds even though they may have more complex design than just a flat support surface.

The price of a platform queen bed frame can be just as cheap as a simple metal frame and on up to where the sky is the limit.

Prepac Oak Juvenile Queen Platform Bed

Expect to pay a bit more for quality wood bed frames. Quality costs but a good bed frame will last for many many years and is a central piece of furniture in any home.

The term platform bed is very general and really just defines a bed that lacks springs and has a surface to support some form of mattress.

Here in Sweden (and if you shop in IKEA) we have a bed mesurement which is 200 x 140 which is simply called 140 and is pretty close to the gueen bed dimensions in US of 203 x 152 (60 x 80 inches). This is a very popular bed size for 1 person households.
