Repair Pet Scratches on Leather Furniture

Updated on May 1, 2014

Pets Leather Furniture = Disaster

Leather furniture is a great addition to any home, it not only provides style and comfort but looks pretty awesome too. There's a lot of factors that can cause damage to leather furniture and goods though, like being directly in the sun, or exposure to the elements as well as playful pets and kids in the house.

I want to share with you my story of what happens when playful pets got rowdy on my living room leather...and how I fixed it.

Pet Sitting and Playful Dogs has never been any issue for me before...

People who know me, know that I am a very pet friendly person. I love my dogs as if they were my kids, and treat them as such. They have no off limit areas in my house, they sit on the couch with me when I watch tv, they lay in bed with me at night, and they can go into any room they please. My best friend asked me to dog sit her dog for the weekend, which is fine with me. I see this pooch all the time. Her name is Lucky, and is a very sweet and spunky mixed breed big dog that loves to play.

So, Lucky came to stay with me and my two pups for the weekend. The first night was totally fine, no issues, we watched some tv, took a walk and played. The second night I had to go to work, and my dogs always just hang out and have the run of the place while I am gone. Well, Miss Lucky was having a tough time adjusting staying the night, apparently.

When I got home from my shift that night, I absolutley could not believe my eyes. In just a few hours Lucky had nearly shredded a very solid very expensive piece of leather furniture. She had been digging at the center cushion and almost perforated the leather, and to make matters worse, the color was totally gone from that entire area where she had been at work on it.

Here's the damage...

Time to Repair what was Damaged

What do I do now?? I hope that my sofa can be saved!

What the heck do I do now?? My friend was as astonished as I was because Lucky had never done this type of crazy destructive behavior, and she felt horrible. She asked me if I wanted her to replace my leather sofa, but honestly, the cost was out of range for either of our budgets. Plus I have a leather chair that matches the couch, and I didn't want to break up the set or have to find all new stuff for my living room! As we began looking into other began to become pretty clear that I needed to find some way repair the leather on my couch.

I didn't have a clue where to begin though, because there was HUGE area of the seats themselves that was affected. I may not know much about repairing furniture, but I'm aware that upholstery is really expensive, almost as much as buying new sofas. Quite frankly I wasn't even sure if this type of damage could even be repaired at all. Lucky had been trying to dig to China or something through the center of the sofa. The center seat cushion had really been through the wringer. There were deep scratches, major color loss, fading, and I was also afraid the seat cushion itself was so weakened and thin that the sofa may have to be totally trashed.

I wanted to fix it myself, but I didn't know where to begin. I looked on the internet for some solutions for furniture repair, but a lot of the products I saw were Do it Yourself, or weird pastes and paints, or glue type substances. I didn't want to risk my furniture's future on some random glue or paste from the internet.

Fortunatley, after much research, I came to the conclusion that my sofa could be SAVED!

I wasn't ready just yet to give up on my beloved living room sofa so I kept looking for solutions. The key to any good home repairs is either knowing someone that can get the job done, or finding a company with rocking reviews and strong recommendations that you can really trust with your furniture and your money. I searched long and hard, exploring my options to try to find a solution to take restore my leather furniture.

turned out to be a fantastic choice that provided me peace of mind. Upon locating a few companies that dealt with that kind of damage, I called around for more information. I got some good answers and found out that you can pretty much fix anything if you have REAL leather furniture, and I was so excited! Fixing scratches and pet damages the RIGHT way is designed to totally rebuild the destroyed section, reconstruct with special compounds that restore and strengthen the weak or damaged areas. The sofa then was re-dyed -not just the area that was reupholstered- but the entire sofa, as part of the repair process. Leather furniture dye is custom matched to exactly the same shade as the original color and I watched the technician make and match the dye exactly to the sofa with my own eyes. That I think was the coolest part. How many people can say that they have had custom blended dye made for them? Not many!

The airbrush application was so evenly applied, and the color was so bright and vibrant I could barely believe my eyes, and that was only my first glance, when my furnitureit was only partly done!

My Final Thoughts on Leather Restoration

After much deliberation and consideration before embarking on this project, to save my sofa, I am convinced that leather repair is pretty darn amazing. The results were outstanding! After the leather resurfacing was done, Lucky's little digging mission was totally invisible, even to me! The missing area were the leather had been scraped down to a worn and raw state was no longer rough and jagged, no more scratches, and the entire cushion of the sofa was spotlessly restored! If you have leather furniture that your pets have scratched or chewed on, don't trash it, reconsider having your leather repaired. This restoration completely saved my beautiful set of leather furniture. I has never has looked so good except for maybe the day that I bought it!

I really never knew that leather repair was available! - Check out some videos, these are ones that I found, that convinced me to try leather repair

The technicians that restored my sofa used a lot of these same techniques and it was very impressive. Leather furniture dye...who knew??

I had no idea that this could be done, leather furniture dye can be used to restore the color of a faded leather jacket!

This is one of the videos that sold me on leather repair...If they can make cat scratches go away, I was sure dog scratches can be restored too!

Now that I know more about leather furniture dye, I'm convinced that it is the only way to go if my leather ever needs another refresher...or if any more wiley pets come into contact with it!

To keep your leather looking great yourself... - unless circumstances beyond your control come into play (like pets!)

These were some products that the pro's recommended to me, to use at my leisure, or every couple months, to keep my leather bright, soft, and strong. Gentle cleaning and conditioning is the secret to keeping that leather couch lasting a lifetime.
