Solar Powered Landscape Lighting: Decorate Your Garden, Patio or Backyard
If you want an amazing looking garden landscape, or if your space is a little darker in the evening than you'd like, you've probably considered ornamental lighting to brighten things up. Solar powered landscape lights are an economical, sustainable and easy to install solution that'll make your garden or outdoor space look incredible.
More people are turning to using solar powered landscape lighting in their patio or garden space due to the obvious advantages. Besides not having to fiddle with replacing batteries or running power cords, solar lights are a great way to save money on your energy bill, and they don't put any extra strain on our busy power grid. Many also turn on automatically, storing energy during the day and switching on once it gets dark out. The lights themselves are beautiful and enhance the looks of your outdoor space.
This article is intended to review some of my favorite solar powered garden lights, offering a close look at the pros and cons of each one. We'll also talk about several considerations you might have before you install. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave a message below.
Solar Garden Lighting Considerations:
A few things to think about before making a purchase
Here are a few things you might want to consider before you make a purchase. There are many different shapes, sizes and varieties of solar powered garden & landscape lights, and this list will hopefully help you narrow down your choices or make important distinctions between the options.
- Hanging, String or Stake Lights?
There are many varieties of solar powered lights for the garden. You should consider which is the most practical before you jump into a purchase. Three common types are hanging lights, which hang from trees or stands and are often styled like traditional lanterns, stake lights, which include a stake to be driven into the ground, and string lights, which are all attached by an electrical wire and can be strung on trees, wire or lattice.
When you're looking for a solar powered landscape light for a garden or patio space, consider whether your intended area has enough light to sufficiently charge up a solar cell. Most lights need at least 5 or 6 hours of sunlight to gain enough power to last for the night. If your garden is pretty shady, it might be better to consider powered versions of these lights.
- Quality VS. Price:
A common weakness in cheap solar powered landscape lighting is the battery. Low quality batteries mean the lights don't last for very long and they run out of juice after only a couple of hours. Be sure to choose a high quality lighting system with excellent reviews, because lower end lights will just cost you money over the long run.
Built in batteries, lasts up to 10 hours with a charge, beautiful hammered glass style fixture.
Moonrays: A good, attractive solar-powered (LED) garden light
These Moonrays Payton-Style solar powered landscape lights are a stake style, and intended to line and light a path after dark, or poke out of the foliage of a garden. The construction is high quality and is black plastic, which means your lights are weatherproof and won't rust.
The solar panel itself sits on the top of the light, and the built-in rechargeable batteries will gather power during the day, and then turn on automatically at night. Since the light source comes from LED bulbs, they require very little energy, and provide a nice warm and bright light. The hammered glass fixture diffuses the light really beautifully, and they last for up to 10 hours per charge. This is definitely a solar garden lighting solution I'd consider first, just because it's simple, easy to install and looks amazing just about anywhere.

The spheres are about 2 inches wide each, and there is around a foot and a half (18") of spacing between each of the 12 spheres. You can mount the solar panel that powers the system just about anywhere; I recommend somewhere high up with lots of light coverage. Like many solar lights, these ones turn on at dusk and last for more than 10 hours. Give your garden a magical quality with these amazing solar patio lights.
