Rustic Home Furnishings are Cozy

Many of us crave a rustic home décor that feels warm and inviting, but we are unsure of how to achieve that feeling in our own homes. One of the easiest ways to create that friendly, comfortable feeling is to decorate your home using warm colors and cozy home design themes.

Rustic home décor is typically achieved by using natural colors and materials. Floors may be hardwood, bamboo or natural stone, often covered with area rugs in natural tones of brown, burnt orange, blue and green. Often Native American blankets and rugs are used as part of your rustic home décor. You may also want to use vintage wrought iron items or antique conversation pieces, especially if they came from old homes or farms.

I love rustic home décor, especially for large families, mountain cabins and second homes. It is a nice way to make people feel at home. For some reason, I have found that people are more comfortable in a house that has been decorated in this way. You will know that you have discovered the essence of this type of home décor when guests feel free to kick off their shoes, put their feet up on an ottoman, or curl up on the sofa.

My family loves to vacation in the mountains and, when possible, we enjoy renting cabins. Most of the time we feel right at home the minute we walked in the door. The rustic décor makes us feel that the furniture is sturdy and able to withstand our active grandchildren. For us, when we rent a mountain cabin, this is exactly the feeling we want to have when we get there.

Elements of Rustic Home Décor

So what does it take to create this comfortable, relaxed feeling in your home or cabin?

Furnishings are typically built of natural woods. Upholstered pieces are either covered in leather or with fabrics that depict scenes from nature, either plants or animals. The furniture is often solid, comfortable and oversized. Nothing is dainty or fragile looking.

Wall décor and other accessories continue with the themes of wood, leather, plants and animals. For example, driftwood picture frames, pressed flowers, hunting trophies, gun racks, and similar items look great when included in your home. You may want to look through the comprehensive assortment of rustic home accessories that are for sale on sites like Amazon and eBay. Sometimes just a few items can completely change the feel of your home.

Rustic home décor is popular with many types of architecture. You may want to use it in a mountain cabin, farmhouse, lake home or a cottage in the city. Rustic furnishings can also be combined with other types of interior design. Many people love the eclectic combination of using some rustic furnishings mixed in with other furniture styles, including ultra-modern and country french, to give their home a personal touch.

There are many rustic home décor items for sale on Amazon and eBay. This includes items that will go well with an overstuffed, comfy sofa as well as in a "man cave." While a softer approach may be to accessorize with floral arrangements and baskets of knitting yarn, a man might prefer this style as a backdrop to his collection of hunting trophies. Rustic décor is very versatile.

Rustic Furniture and Accessories

Start with an assortment of rustic home furniture items that you can mix in with the favorite items of furniture you already own. By combining your current home furnishings with a few items made of roughly carved wood, you can begin to create the rustic feeling that you desire.

In addition, you may want to add a few soft fleece blankets in neutral colors and set around a few natural colored baskets. Neutral colors, natural fabrics, and distressed wood are all components of the rustic look.

Look For Charming Items for Your Home

You will find many charming items for your cottage if you shop in local stores. Whether your home is at the beach, in the mountains or in a rural area will have an impact on the items that you choose to purchase.

There are Even Rustic Versions of Religious Symbols

Nearly everything can be purchased with either a smooth, glossy finish or a more rugged finish, such as the cross below. Display your faith and stay with your favorite home décor at the same time.

The more time you spend looking for these charming items, the more fun you can have collecting the right items for your home. You'll start to notice that there are great items for your home in small shops everywhere you go.

Rustic Wall Accessories

You will want to have an assortment of attractive accessories for your home, too. You will want to hang up cute signs, use distressed frames and feature wild animals and birds whenever possible.

There are so many cute things you can find. You might discover the perfect item in an old barn or antique store. However, they don't always have the selection that you may want.

Everyday Items Can Look Rustic, Too!

Even items as simple as a framed painting, a mirror or a clock can have natural woods trims and styles that help them to blend in well in your cabin or cottage.

The Rustic Look in the Kitchen and Bath

In some cases, you may not want to decorate your entire home in rustic home décor. You may want a more old-fashioned comfortable feel in the living room and bedrooms, but go with a cute country style in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Of course, your kitchen and bathrooms are filled with modern equipment, microwave ovens, indoor plumbing and anything but the old style fixtures that date back to earlier times. However, if you use a lot of natural wood and stone, like granite, in your bathroom and kitchen, you can create a charming look simply by adding a few fun signs and other decorations on the walls.

Have fun when decorating your home, no matter what the design, and remember to bring along your sense of humor. Features that make you and your guests smile will make everyone feel more comfortable in your home.

Rustic Decor in the Kitchen

Even the most modern kitchen, with granite counters and contemporary styling, can be softened with a touch of rustic decor items.

Add old-fashioned wall hooks, a picnic style or heavy oak dining table, and adorable framed flowers or posters, and it is easy to create a rustic, charming look in your home.

Rustic Bathroom Décor

Have a little fun when accessorizing your bathrooms, too! In fact, guest bathrooms are especially delightful when decorated in a country, rustic décor.

Look for wood framed mirrors and old photographs, and old-fashioned bathroom knobs and faucets for the sink.

Finish off the look with one or two of these items. Everyone will love the way your bathroom looks!
