Savvy Space Saving Ideas

Updated on January 23, 2017

Organizing Ideas I Use at Home

If you've read any of my Squidoo pages before you may remember I live in a very small cottage in Hawaii. How small? Well, 640 sq ft to be exact. So I'm always looking for ideas to help me save precious inches.

The organizing ideas I'm showcasing on this page are just a few from my list of favorites currently in use. I've found many ideas and oodles of inspiration online which have helped me stay tidy and sane living in such a small space. From the list I've grouped together here I hope you find one or two to adopt as your own.

Open Kitchen Shelving - Vertical and Efficient

I actually got this idea for the kitchen shelves from a photo on Better Homes and Gardens website. The picture featured an entire wall of shelves built around the refrigerator. Since the main part of our small kitchen is built galley style, I was searching for ways to get the most use of this wall space.

Cup hooks and under shelf wire baskets give me additional storage. My paper towel holder is an under shelf mount. I also have two stemware racks (on the shopping list above) mounted under one of the shelves allowing extra shelf space for more needed dishes.

As you can see in the picture above, our silverware is neatly organized upright in this eco friendly bamboo caddy. The back of the caddy isn't divided so you can fit larger utensils there and keep forks, knives and spoons in front.

Get Additional Storage On Interior Cabinet Walls - Easy to DIY

Use a Towel Rack for Pot Lid Storage
Use a Towel Rack for Pot Lid Storage

Need more storage for pot lids? Use a single towel rack (mine is a basic design from IKEA which I purchased in the mainland) and mount it a few inches above the cabinet floor. Viola! Lids are now easy to find and organized. See, you have more storage space than you thought, don't you? :)

Ideas for a Narrow But Deep Utility Closet

Organized Utility Closet
Organized Utility Closet

This is my neat and tidy utility closet. Unfortunately I did not have the space to back up in the hallway and take this photo so I'm showing you the bottom portion of the closet only in the picture.

Located at the upper back of this closet I've mounted a shelf for storage. Hanging under that shelf from a sturdy cup hook are two wire baskets with chains for miscellaneous items. Screwed into studs on the right side of the closet is my handy broom and dust mop holder. (see availability below)

Front and center is my Dirt Devil Simpli-Stik which I adore. I have written all about this product here. Behind that on the floor I have a rubber tote with my basic cleaning supplies. This is my tiny, tidy and terrific utility closet. :)

Our itty bitty utility closet in the hallway is 11 inches wide and two feet deep, but as you can see in my photo above this holder does the job in style! :)

Organizing Space in the Medicine Cabinet - Go Vertical!

Small Bathroom Organization
Small Bathroom Organization

Many medicine cabinets are purchased with only one shelf. Our budget-friendly model had room for at least one more standard shelf when I nabbed it off the clearance aisle.

I could have made a second shelf fairly easily from our leftover wood stock, however, I also badly needed more organization. Searching online I found my solution....this medicine cabinet organizer shelf combines storage and organization and it fits perfectly inside my medicine cabinet. :)

Storage tip: Look closely and you'll see the nail clippers are secured vertically via a magnet on the inside cabinet door hinge.

Hiding The Wireless Router and Cable Box - Why dust them if you don't have to? :)

Wall Mounted Wireless Router

Look closely at your wireless router and cable box and I'll bet you will see there are small openings for screws on the bottom of each. Use these to mount both onto the wall behind a cabinet. Wires are tucked out of the way neatly and it'll be two less things you have to dust.

Bonus: You'll be able to put the surface they previously occupied to better use.

Savvy Surfboard Storage Idea

Before our recent remodel of our cottage, my husband stored his best surfboards on the bedroom walls. After the remodel he made new racks to store those same boards under our lanai (patio) roof. I prefer this storage to the former. :)

Hi Pam, You have presented some very good ideas on being organized. I live in a very small house 1100 sq. foot. I had a big one and downsized to the small one. I like most of your space saving ideas. Nice to meet you, Stella

Wow! So many good ideas. After seeing how cleverly you manage a small space, I' feel guilty making poor use of our larger (than yours) closets. Would you come help me? :)

I absolutely love the towel rack as lid holder idea! Even I could do that DIY!

Lately, I'm not doing as well as I'd like in the organized and tidy department. Too many big doings keeping me from the little stuff this last six months, but my sweetheart and I have been nibbling away at it. Even if we can spend only a few minutes each day, we find those few minutes make a difference, especially as they add up.

Pam, even though we live in a good-sized house, I'm such a pack rat with so many hobbies that clutter is a constant problem. These space saving organizing ideas are spot on! Thanks so much for sharing. :)

@Diana Wenzel: Thank you! When I originally spied that skinny pantry online I KNEW we had to make it for this remodel. It's really a neat idea that can be customized to fit in a snap. :)

Love these organizing tools, Pam. That roll out skinny pantry is sheer genius. Will check out your other review on the hinge hanger. Thanks for so many great ideas. No matter how much, or little, space we have, we can all use clever organization systems. A++ for yours.
