Quick Facts about Seahorses

In addition to being so visually alluring, these little sea creatures are also fascinating to learn about.

Here are a few basic sea horse facts.

Did You Know?

Seahorses are actually fish!

There are about 54 different species, all belonging the the genus hippocampus.

The seahorse has no teeth.

It is the male that gives birth.

In Greek, hippos means horse, and kampos means sea monster.

Like chameleons on land, these precious little charmers can change colors to blend in with their surroundings. This helps them hide from marine animals that want to eat them.

So, just who is it that wants to eat them? Crabs, stingrays, and tuna, among others.

They can pick up and hold on to things with their tails. They often curl their tails around corals and seagrasses and hang on so that they don't get swept away by the ocean currents. You see, although they are fish, they are not strong swimmers.

Video of Seahorses - Enjoy!

Seahorses like to 'anchor' themselves with their tails. Then, when they decide to move, it's just amazing to watch as they glide along, propelled by those seemingly tiny 'wings' on their backs. (Those wings are actually dorsal fins.)

By the way, the music chosen to accompany this short video is just perfect.
