Searching for Vintage Venetian Murano Art Glass Everywhere I Go

Updated on June 14, 2016

My search for art glass everywhere I go

Searching for Vintage Venetian Murano Art Glass. Murano glass art glass is known for its quality and beauty, having been manufactured since about the 8th century in Venice. Venetian glass making was first made by artisans during the Roman Empire. Molded art glass was used to light the bath houses during ancient times. It became popular as the processing of art glass was perfected to produce a premium glass that was clear.

Artisans produced this art glass and where encouraged to pass the secrets of its production through the generation. They became a privileged group that was treated like royalty. The children of these artisans were allowed to go to the finest schools and marry into the aristocracy. About 1200 BC the finest artist were designated by law to move to the city of Murano to produce what is known today as Murano Glass.

I truly enjoy Murano Glass and began collecting it quite a few year ago. Although, my collection was lost during hurricane Katrina, I have recently decided that I will begin a new collection. Since I live on the Gulf Coast, my home is decorated in a coastal style and my main focus will be sea creatures.

I previously had some angel fish that I had collected many years ago when my husband and I were honeymooning in the Virgin Islands, There we decided that we would buy decorative glass, instead of t-shirts every time we visited somewhere special. In the picture in this section I have the first purchase that began my recent "NEW" collection of Murano glass. He is a beautiful deep blue with flecks of red and white, he is similar in design to one I previously own but a different color. I decided that since I enjoy Murano, so much I would make and effort to search for vintage pieces similar to my old ones.

My Recent Search for the Perfect Piece

This is one of the pieces I found on one of my recent trips in search of Murano for my collection. On this trip I discovered quite a few exquisite examples I want to share with you. On this particular vase you can see the striations that were created by a well practice artisan. One of the characteristic I enjoy the most is that no two samples of Murano are the same. Each one is made by hand using ancient glass blowing techniques, making each one not only a piece of art, but a one of a kind specimen.

I learned from my father the photographer to crop out the clutter.

Many of the places I went were cluttered with things, so I cropped most of the photos for better esthetics.

Antique shops near and far

This was one piece I found very interesting, it had the appearance of alabaster, however it was frosted Murano glass. I had a very nice trip to some local antique shops here In Mississippi. I discovered a few in New Orleans which is very close to where I live. While I was there I took lots of photo of many things that interested me for more lense articles. I have and will be sharing more of these photos in some of my other lenses. I was only limited to the number of photos I could store on my memory card.

I love to visit your lenses, I always find something new and learn something interesting. But I have a question - is there fake Murano glass? Pinned to my collectibles board.
