What Is A Sunflower?

Technically speaking, a sunflower is a head made of of many small flowers.

The outer part or what I think of as the petals can be a number or colors including yellow, maroon and orange.

The part inside the head are called disc florets and they eventually become the sunflower seeds and are the fruit of the sunflower.

The outside of each seed is considered a shell and the actual seed lies within the husk.

Why Are Sunflowers Always Turning?

A sunflower is heliotropic. It faces different directions over the course of the day.

A sunflower in the bud stage faces different directions over the course of the day. When they do so, they are exhibiting heliotropism. When the sun comes up, they look to the east. As the day progresses, they follow the progression of the sun from east to west and at night they go back to looking eastward.

When a sunflower is no longer in the bud stage but is blooming, it loses its heliotropic nature. The stem stays put, usually facing east and the leaves and stem cease being green.

Wild sunflowers behave differently and usually do not turn toward the sun and, therefore, you may find the flowers looking in different directions. The leaves, however, may have some tendency to heliotropism.

What Do Sunflowers Need To Grow Well?

The preferred conditions of a sunflower.

The sunflower is native to North America and in order to be successful, sunflowers must be planted in full sun and experience warm weather. They also prefer fertile, moist but well-drained soil and they like mulch. You can start them indoors in the late spring in order to give them a head start or you can plant them directly in your garden soil once there is no longer a danger of frost.

What Are Sunflowers Used For?

Sunflowers have many uses.

Some things that sunflowers are used for are obvious to those in the know (like the snacking sunflower seed) but there may be one or two uses for the sunflower about which you are not aware.

  • The whole seed of the sunflower is eaten as a snack food, after it has been roasted. When sold commercially, sunflower seeds most often have salt added.

  • Sunbutter is a peanut butter substitute made from sunflowers.

  • When mixed with rye flour, Sonnenblumenkernbrot (sunflower whole seed bread) is created.

  • Sunflower seeds are fondly sought after by some birds and so are sold as bird food.

  • Sunflowers seeds are used in cooking and salads.

  • An oil, called sunflower oil, is extracted from the seeds of the sunflower plant and then used for cooking.

  • Sunflower oil can be used as a carrier oil.

  • Sunflower oil can be used to make margarine.

  • Sunflower oil can be used to make biodiesel.

  • Did we say that sunflowers make beautiful cut and potted flowers?

How Can I Use Sunflowers To Decorate My Home?

How much or how little you choose to feature sunflowers in your home is, of course, up to you. Hopefully, we have featured at least one great piece of artwork that you like and would consider decorating your walls with.

After the art, you can consider a wide variety of kitchen products like dishes, coffee mugs and accessories, a few of which we will showcase here in a minute.

But we don't think you should limit yourself to items with sunflowers on them. We think a perfect sunflower theme would include items simply drawn from the rich world of colors that the sunflower comes in from the obvious yellow to the oranges and the reds. A mix will make a truly inspired décor. Have fun!

Beautiful sunflowers! There's a little garden patch that I drive by on a regular basis. During the summer I always look forward to watching the rows of sunflowers that are always included. I'm considering sunflowers as a decoration for my new kitchen, so I may just be back. Love your gorgeous sunflower artwork!

Congratulations on making Kim G's "Another Day of 100 Squid Angel Blessings" with this great lens. I grew 60 acres of sunflowers under contract several years ago for the oil and they were gorgeous when blooming and unusual to see in this part of SC. Stars and a favorite to you.

I love sunflowers too. I grow a few each year just to brighten the garden. And their big sunny faces really do follow the sun.
