Set a Beautiful Table Using Charger Plates
Dress Up Your Table With Chargers
Charger Plates can turn a plain table setting into a fun table or an elegant table. I spent some time at a friend's home recently having fun pulling together different table settings using all her various dishes and chargers.
I only own a set of dark green ones but would love to get gold ones to go with my fine china. I love the way they dress up a table. Actually, I would like chargers in many different colors and shapes.
What is a Charger Plate?
I Enjoy Using Charger Plates
A Charger Plate is an over-sized decorative plate that goes beneath the dinner plate. Food is never served on the Charger Plate and it is sometimes called an Under Plate.
According to Wikipedia, they have been around since the 19th century but regained popularity in the 1990s. Actually, I would have to disagree with that since I remember them being very popular in the 70's, as well. I got my set in 1979, I believe. I now have 12 of the Hunter Green ones and have really enjoyed them over the years. I would like a gold set to use with my good china, too.

Emily Post Etiquette
Emily Post states:
"At holiday times charger plates, also known as service plates, make a cameo appearance on our tables. In stunning gold, copper, silver, black, emerald green and ruby red, they turn their practical sisters, the soup bowl or salad plate, into Cinderellas for the evening.
This large plate, usually about 12" in diameter, serves as an underplate for the plate or bowl holding the first course. The first course is brought to the table and set on the service plate. When the first course is cleared, the service plate remains until the plate holding the entrée is served, at which point the service plate is exchanged for the entrée plate." Emily Post

How To Set A Formal Table Video
Learning Proper Etiquette
Most folks don't set a formal table ever and some only do on special occasions. It would be nice to do it just for your family every so often and make it a learning time for the children.
It seems that we all have become much more casual and even eating on the run. If we don't continue to teach proper mealtime etiquette, it will be lost forever and that would be a sad state for us to be in.
Creating a beautiful table with the proper settings on special occasions just for your family would be a great way to keep this knowledge alive. Let you children become a part of the planning and the decorating. You will be creating memories that can be passed on to the next generation and to generations to come.
If you don't feel confident in setting a formal table, there are plenty of helpful videos and articles to refer to. Let your children watch the videos, too, and that way they might realize the importance and know that it is not just something you made up.
