Loraine, who worked 17 years doing interior wall painting and papering, shares tips and ideas that simplify painting decisions. Home updates

Are you looking for simple and easy ways to update your home on a budget? You'll like quick and inexpensive home improvement project ideas that will update the look of your home. You don't need to make extensive or expensive changes to your home to give it a completely new and updated look.

The first thing you'll want to do is to de-clutter. Getting rid of knick knacks, wall hangings and greenery, which no longer contribute to the décor of your home, will be a great start. Also, give away or trash old magazines and books that you no longer need or want.

In this article I'm going to you give a few tips to update your home that take a minimum amount of time or money.

Tip # 1: First Impression

The next time you return home, take an outsider's view of the approach to your home. First impressions are very important because it reflects on the care you give your home.

It only takes seconds of your time to develop a habit of keeping the approach to your home neat. Also dead or overgrown plants or bushes and edges of sidewalks or pavers that are in need of a trim, make for an untidy first impression.

A once a week trim is all it takes to keep the plants and sidewalks presentable. Folks will see immediately how much you love your home and feel welcomed to visit.

Tip # 2 A Painting Tip

Maybe you don't want to paint a whole room, but to give it a new updated look, choose a focal wall and paint it.

Tip # 3 Add Color Accents

You may not want to replace a chair or sofa, but you can add color to your room by using slipcovers. Choose a lighter weight fabric and add whimsical or contemporary print throw pillows.

This is a perfect opportunity to add brightness and color to a room. For instructions for easy to sew pillows, go to the DIY mommy.

Tip # 4 Change the Lighting

Update the lighting in your room by changing the lamps or lamp shades. Update ceiling lighting with a new, more stylish fixture.

Watch for sales to get the best deal on lamps, shades or light fixtures. Cover your own lamp shade.

Tip # 5 Shampoo Carpets and Upholstered Furniture

What a difference a good carpet cleaning can make to the looks of a room. An added bonus: the room will smell great!

Replace an area rug that has become overly worn. Again, watch for sales on area rugs and spruce up a few rooms in the process.

Tip # 6 Move Pieces of Furniture

Make sure you don’t have too much furniture in a room. That gives the room a cluttered look. Move pieces from one room to another for an updated look.

Invest in a nice magazine rack to keep newspapers and magazines neat.

Tip # 7 Update Wall Art

This is also a way to add a "pop" of color to the room. The art doesn't have to be expensive, stores like Hobby Lobby or other craft stores regularly have their pictures on sale for half price.

Watch the ads or check their websites to know when to buy. The above wall art is on Amazon, but it is not stretched on a frame.

Tip # 8 Update Family Photos

If you display family photos, get rid of outdated pictures and change to black and white, current photos.

Every room should have a bit of black in the décor, and black and white photos, in black frames, would make an attractive display.

Tip # 9 Kitchen Update

Something as simple as changing the hardware on your kitchen cabinets can make a world of difference. Choose a new, modern style of pulls and knobs.

If your cabinets are quite worn, consider painting them. You'll save lots of money doing this yourself. You'll want to prepare the cabinets correctly before painting, so go to This Old House for information.

Tip #10 If Selling Your Home: All Important First Impression

You'll want to take a look at this list to get the best price possible when selling your home. Check the listed suggestions, for preparing your home to sell, at NAMASTE REALTY.

NOTICE: I'm not affiliated with that business in any way. I just think they have a great list for getting a home ready to sell.
