Create a Tuscan Patio

Updated on June 21, 2016

Turn Your Outdoor Living Space into a Dream Retreat - A Bit of Tuscany in Your Back Yard

Do you love a sunny space, edged with rustic planters spilling over with lush flowers? Can you picture yourself in Tuscany with stone pavers underfoot and ...

You can do it, create this haven of peace and rusticity right in your own back yard. First you need to familiarize yourself with the elements that give that Tuscan feel.

Once you identify what you love about the Tuscan look, start hunting for similar items to use on your patio.

Tuscan Doorway by Traditions

Get the Picture in Your Mind

Look at lots of pictures of Tuscan gardens, patios and landscaping to get ideas. Decide what appeals to you the most, so you can include those elements in your own outdoor living space. Are you attracted to the weathered look of the stonework, to the way the plants are grouped, to the splash of color (like in the green shutters here)?

This is basically a pictorial of the ins and outs of italian lifestyle. I find the rich colors and sense of simplicity coming through the photos to be what I needed for the project I am working on. (review from amazon.com)

Books to Soak up Tuscan Atmosphere

I can spend hours browsing books like these to get ideas and see what others have done. These are beautiful books. As you leaf through these over and over, your mind becomes attuned to the colors, the feel, the very essence of what is Tuscany. Then you are ready to transform your yard or patio or deck with what you love from these books.

Check at the public library to see if they have any of these books or you can order them from Amazon.

Use a Painting to Inspire That Tuscan Feeling - for your patio (check out this short video)

Choose a painting or a poster as your inspiration. Hang it where you will see it often. Choose elements in the picture and figure out how to incorporate those into your patio area.

Tuscan Patios Are Easy to Care for

No grass to mow, just a few pots to tend and trim. The greenery softens the hard surfaces of stone walls and paved patio. I really like how easy it is to care for this kind of landscaping.

Under the Tuscan Sun - the DVD

Here's the story that everyone thinks of when Tuscany is mentioned. I loved the book and then was a little dismayed by the changes they made when it became a movie. It was visually quite enjoyable and wouldn't you love to be a guest on her patio one day!

Take a Trip to Tuscany - Come Back with Lots of Ideas for Your Tuscan Patio

Imagine staying in a Tuscan villa and breakfasting on the patio. The sun is shining down on you while weathered stone and colorful pots of flowers surround you. Take a look online at the enticing selection of villas available for booking. You'll get lots of ideas just browsing the photos of the villas on the website, but seeing them in person will be even better. Take along the camera and return home with lots of photos and notes to plan your Tuscan patio and wonderful memories of your holiday in the sun.

Serene

The lines of an Italian patio create a soothing space to relax

Note here the use of wood decking underfoot. There are the terra cotta colors in the coping on the wall and in some of the pots. The bright colors show up in another pot.

What My Friends Like about Tuscan Landscaping

When I asked my friends what aspects most appealed to them in creating an Italian style patio, here's what they shared with me:

  • I just love the warm, welcoming look of the old worn stonework, the pots and flowers, the informal arrangement of Tuscan decor. I'd love to have a patio like any of these. We have both a patio and a screened deck. Maybe I'll make the patio a project.
  • I would just love a Tuscan patio and you know, now I have visited your page, I see that I am halfway there! We already have rustic stone slabs, we have honeysuckle and roses climbing up wooden posts and some clematis. I could do with some more rustic pots though,

Include Decorative Elements from Tuscany

You see arches often. Note the raised decorative touches on the pots . The colors are mostly earth tones in a soft blend of tans and rosy hues.

The bricks form a herringbone pattern and are set off in sections for more interest.

Look for Pots and Troughs - with the look of Tuscany

Italian pottery often is painted with vibrant colors and whimsical designs. Just fill this with your choice of plants and enjoy.

The colors and designs are so cheerful, this will look great on a Tuscan patio.

Adding Water and Fire - to your Tuscan patio area

Rustic Metal Urn, Large - Gardman 8225

Wow, this really looks like it has been sitting on a Tuscan patio for at least 50 years. Great vintage look.

Shade for a Tuscan Patio or Garden

Shaded from the Hot Sun

The use of arbor here extends the patio use to mid-day. Choose a vining plant suitable to your locale. It can be bougainvillea if you are far enough south or grapevine or clematis for further north.

This Pergola Really Enhances a Tuscan Patio

My sister added a pergola to her backyard and it looks fabulous. A little shade is always welcome from the hot midday sun. Try an arbor or pergola to screen that hot sun.

Sure would love my backyard looking like this!

Plants for the Tuscan Patio

Plant container plants in colorful pots like those seen in Italy. Herbs from the Mediterranian area thrive even in hot, dry conditions.

Metal Designs and Ironwork with a Vintage Look

Bronze or wrought iron finish.... I love, love, love this look.
