What to Do with Broken Plates

Updated on January 14, 2015

Ideas for How to Use Broken Dishes

You broke another plate or maybe one of your darlings broke a dish. Well, fear not! Here's what to do with broken plates and cracked dishes.

The obvious answer is to go ahead and smash those cracked and broken dishes into even smaller pieces to use for mosaics. That's a great option. But there are other ways to put those broken dishes to use.

For instance, I use this vintage cup (with a broken or missing handle) to hold baking soda in the fridge. I think it's much prettier than sticking the box in there.

Display Plates That Only Have a Small Nick or Hairline Crack

If you have a pretty plate or saucer that only has a nick or hairline crack, you might want to display it on the wall.

If it's not safe to use to eat from, it can still adorn your wall or shelf and be a lovely addition to your home d├ęcor.

I love a grouping or cluster of plates on the wall. They're the perfect accent for any room!

Reuse Broken Plates

If a plate or dish has a crack and isn't safe to use

for food, think of how else it can be used.

I use the vintage platter (shown below)

on my kitchen counter to hold

the dish soap, stopper, and scratchy pad.

The Broken China Mosaic Artist's Prayer

God grant me the serenity...

to accept that not all

china should be broken,

the courage to love the cuts

that go wonky,

and the wisdom to know

when a project is done.

Mosaics seems the best bet for me. I don't think I have the patience for anything else.

@julieannbrady: Yes, me too if it's fixable. Using it for a candle is another great option!

Gosh, I try to glue 'em back together and then use them for candle trays.

Mostly I don't break them, but I'll turn some into mosaic stepping stones, eventually.
