The Uses of A Candle

Updated on June 14, 2011

Candles - I could have them everywhere!

There's no doubt about it that I love candles and, the more candles I have around me, the happier - and more relaxed - I am.

I've looked into myself and have come up with a few reasons I love candlelight so much:

- with little light available, it forces me to slow down and relax.

- I love the soft glow that a candle provides; it lends an atmosophere of peace and tranquility.

- Its flickering flames cause my memories to shift in various directions and, though I carry a few painful memories, there is an abundance of great memories and I choose to focus on those.

I'm sure if I looked even deeper, I would come up with other reasons why I lvoe candles so much but the focus of this lens isn't on that; it's on when you would use a candle and I'm here to offer you a few ideas in case you haven't yet come across them in your journey through life.

#1 personal reason to use candles

I can't remember the last time I turned the actual light on while in the bath. I use candles instead; it cuts down on electricity costs, helps save the environment but, most of all, creates a wonderful atmosphere for just relaxing without a care in the world. If I want to read in the bath, I light more candles.

White Votive and Tealight Candles

Of course, these come in a variety of colors but there is something about a white candle which lets it stand out anywhere - even in a room clad mostly in white. These candles enhance any room and they are great for those who have a tight budget...

#2 personal reason to use candles

I never know when the power will go out; though it doesn't happen often, it's imperative to know where the matches and a candle is so my family won't be left in the dark - especially during the winter months when darkness lasts for nearly 18 hours a day.

#3 personal reason to use candles

In all honesty, even for an energetic person like me, there comes a time when I'm too lazy/tired to get out of bed.

Reading My Amazon Kindle

My partner recently gave me one of my heart's desires - an Amazon Kindle, the latest generation. Of course, I can't read it in the dark and I don't wish to read it with the main lights on, especially at night when I want to relax and don't want to move from bed after settling in. Because I don't fall asleep when reading, I've often used a candle or flashlight to read at night.

However, now there is another time of candle and, if you own an Amazon Kindle or other e-reader, I would encourage you to check it out...

#4 personal reason to use candles

Sometimes I like to sit and relax without hearing the sound of voices - times when I like to hear nothing but the sound of the clock ticking and the hum of the refrigerator. During those times, I light a candle or two and turn off all other lights in the house. I don't feel the rushed hectic pace of life and feel that I've taken a mini-vacation without spending as much as a penny.

I love this candle - partially because the candle lasts a long time and still provides a decent glow. Furthermore, I enjoy it because it provides me with one of my favorite scents in the world - vanilla.

#5 personal reasons to use candles

Birthdays come only once a year but, when they arrive, candles are generally used to adorn a cake or pie to celebrate the occasion. It's the final touch at a child's birthday party or the dessert to be enjoyed at the end of a teen's or adult's birthday.

The fun thing about birthday candles is that we no longer need to use the same types of candles year after year.

#6 personal reason to use candles

Sometimes when my candles are lit and I'm about to turn in for the night, I take a candle with me to check on my little one to make sure he has settled down comfortably for the night.

It makes me wonder what it would have been like to live years ago when lanterns and dim-lighting was the norm for people. Sometimes, I believe I would have enjoyed living in such an existence; at other times, I'm glad I live in an age filled with electronics.

#7 personal reason to use candles

When the occasion permits, it's wonderful to spend time with my partner with the rooom illuminated only by candles - and the candles don't have to be limited to a bedroom setting.

Candlelight dinners are enjoyable and, even when watching a movie at home, the dim light of a candle lends enough light so that your eyes don't struggle to adjust to the darkness.

Also, on a windless night, it's wonderful to sit outside with only the light form the moon and stars - and a few candles.

Changing Colors Candles - oooh, la, la!

Candles are beautiful at anytime but imagine looking at candles which change colors! It truly is a fascinating experience; I could sit and watch these candles for hours when time permits...

Do you use candles in your home? What other uses do you have for them? Did this lens appeal to you in any way? I would love for you to share your thoughts...

I love candles too. I do have them all over the house. I love fires too, so, maybe I am a pyro!

I've gotten away from candles except for Christmas...can't have the holiday without them. I enjoy listening to Christmas music and having candlelight.

I love candles and burn them often. I use them during my prayer and meditation time in the morning. I sometimes like to burn them when I'm working on the computer. I love snuggling up with a blanket, some tea, a great book and candles. And I love to burn scented candles for an awesome, yummy aroma like hot apple pie or vanilla :).
