A Wooden Bench For Your Garden

Updated on January 15, 2015

Outdoor Furniture: A Wooden Garden Bench

Have you always wanted a wooden garden bench?...And nobody is listening? Be persistent and it will happen! I had always wanted a garden bench...since we'd had our own home in fact.

It always seemed to be the same ~ "What do you want for your...birthday...Christmas...?" He asked once again.

"A garden bench!"

Nothing happened for a couple of years. When the question arose again, "What do you want....?" I declared it didn't matter as it never happened. This time there was no mention of any sort of bench by me but he must have been listening! Lo and behold my birthday arrived and a so did a wooden bench!

Don't give up ladies. They don't always seem to listen but our men do sometimes hear. It took three years...I told you.

Let's take a look at some wooden garden benches....they are a great addition to any garden. Your little place of refuge from the world.

My Wooden Garden Bench

This is my garden bench...a few years old now. It sits in the corner of our garden where it is sheltered from the cold Easterly wind. It is a little sun trap. This picture was taken early morning so the sun is not on it as yet.

I even use it to finish off the drying process in the winter as our washing line doesn't get much sun during the winter...but in the afternoon my garden bench does. It ends up being draped with things that need a bit of warmth and sunshine.

It's a quiet spot for reading and relaxing. A place to be with your own company and experience quiet time.

I plan to put some pot plants around the bench. Unfortunately I've not got green fingers so the lemon tree died (more to do with the frost really...that's my story). Then the big pot I had that I thought I'd grow herbs in got transferred to replace one that broke in the earthquakes! I'll wait a while...

Outdoor Russian-pine Wood Swing [Kitchen]

This sort of bench ( a swing seat) brings back memories of when I was a young girl living overseas. It is so relaxing sitting in a swing seat...and romantic for lovers!

This stylish seat is a good price for what you get. Made of Russian-pine wood which has been oiled and lacquered it is great for the patio or the garden. Easy enough to assemble...and a great price.

Adding Accessories

Accessories such as outdoor cushions add comfort and a splash of color.

Hmmm...must change that picture soon! A bit of extra color required!

Benches in Wood are Comfortable.

I like a wooden bench as I find it warmer and more comfortable than sitting on a steel frame. You do need to make sure that the bench will be protected from the weather as it will be outdoors through rain, hail, snow and shine.

And wooden benches don't rust! They are a classic.

You can stain your bench and paint but natural is lovely! You can oil them but make sure the oil soaks through before sitting on your bench,

It's best not to leave the cushions out even though they may be weather resistant.

Wood or Steel?

For steel read aluminium and iron.

Do you prefer a wooden garden bench or do you like steel?

Wood for me. It goes with the garden!

    Wood for me, more comfy.

I like the look of wood, it seems more natural, but in our area steel lasts a lot longer, and there are so many beautiful steel benches.

How to Restore Weathered Wooden Furniture

  1. Sand down the surface of your bench
  2. Clean your bench by mixing one tablespoon of bleach, five tablespoons of dishwash liquid, and one gallon of water. Gently scrub this mixture on the surface of the wood with a soft bristle brush.
  3. Rinse the bench, and allow it to dry naturally and completely in the sun.
  4. Apply oil to prevent further weathering.
  5. DO NOT use a water blaster as the power will only splinter the wood!

This bench could do with a bit of extra oiling...don't you think?

Make sure your bench is dry before you try sitting in it!

Also make sure it's not dripping on to the flag stones or deck!

Reclaimed Wood Bench - For that rustic look

This bench suddenly appeared in the walkway down the road from our house. It looked abandoned and as if someone didn't want it. It was soon placed in various spots until it found the position it now occupies. It looks as though it's been made from an old deck. I've seen young couples sitting on it and talking so it's nice that someone now appreciates this reclaimed bench.

Make a Recycled Wooden Garden Bench

Making a bench from old wood is great for those DIY handy people. Here's a few videos to help you get started. I've also included a couple of photos of a reclaimed wooden bench that is in the 'green' areas around our neighbourhood. Someone left it for the general public's use some time ago. We don't know who, but it's a lovely idea. I reckon it is made from an old deck.
