Once you have decided that you need more storage space, it is time to decide how you can get it. One way to increase your available space is to erect a wooden storage shed. Now this is just one choice. You can also get metal, plastic, or vinyl sheds. You will also find that a wooden shed has a higher upfront cost that a vinyl, metal, or plastic shed.

Consider, though, that a properly built and maintained woodshed can last you 20 or more years. Some are still being used after 100 years. Whereas sheds built from other material rarely last this long.

You Have More Choices Than Just Wooden Storage Sheds. You Can Find Sheds Made From Metal, Plastic, and Vinyl.

This is a good metal storage shed. Many of these are in backyards all across America.

Plastic sheds are relative newcomers. With one of these you never have to worry about rust.

Vinyl sheds are also very popular. Nice looking, but it's not very easy to modify the design.

A wooden shed will also easily take a variety of finishes. You can treat it to resist rot, water, termites, and the weather. It can be painted and repainted easily, and you never have to worry about it rusting. And if worse comes worse, you can replace parts of the shed with new wood easily. You can't do that with other types of sheds.

You have two main choices now. Do you buy a pre-made wooden garden shed kit or do you make your own.

There are some advantages and disadvantages of each kind.

When You Buy a Wooden Storage Shed as a Kit, This is What You Get.

This is a shed kit with the floor and walls already built. It is delivered to your lot and you just have to put the pieces together.

Pre-manufactured kits are by far easier to build. The kits comes with all the materials you need to complete the shed. Be sure that you buy the kit from a source you trust. Read some reviews on the internet about the different kits, so you don't buy one that is not top quality. A kit is great for someone with no experience.

If you are up for the challenge, you can build your own shed. Doing this will usually save you a lot of money. It does take some more time and you need to be sure that you are careful in the planning stages.

The big advantage of building your own is the variety of wooden shed designs to choose from. If you buy a kit, you can only choose from a few available models.

You can find thousands of plans for sheds on the internet. There are tons of free plans and no shortage of plans you have to pay for. If you really want a good quality shed, I recommend you actually buy the plans. This is especially true for someone without much experience.

Paid plans will come with a detailed material list and step by step instructions to help you build a great shed. There will also be plans for many different wooden storage sheds in the package, so you can choose what level of options you want.

If you want to buy a kit, go to many different dealers. Be sure to go to Lowes, Home Depot, and your local suppliers. Also look online at places like Amazon and Ebay. If you know the companies name, you can go straight to their website.

Shopping around will give you more options. It will also let you find the best deal so you can stay within your budget.

If you decide to build a shed, you can look forward to saving yourself a lot of money. You will need to buy the plans and materials. You can take the material list that came with the plans to your home center and they can tell you exactly how much it will cost. Then all that is left is to spend the time to actually build the shed.

You need to spend time planning carefully. Make sure you pick the right spot in your yard. Choose the best plans. Make sure you have all the necessary materials. If you do this, you should be able to erect a reasonably sized wooden garden shed in a weekend.

Find the highest quality wooden garden shed plans you can and buy them. If you follow them exactly and work carefully, there is no reason why your shed couldn't look like this one.
