Family Fun Nights - Inexpensive but Great Ideas

Entertaining your family should be fun and not break the bank. You can have a great time with your family and spend little to no money in the process. Are you thinking "How many game nights can we do?"?. Game nights are fun, and they are free. This is a great idea for those long winter nights, but there are also so many more things to do with your family. I will break them down by season for you.

Winteris probably the hardest time to get outdoors, but there is plenty to enjoy indoors. Do you have a fireplace? Why not build a fire and roast marshmallows together? You could even make smores. My kids love doing this. You can also have a picnic indoors. Spread a blanket on the floor and have all the traditional picnic foods you enjoy so much in the summer. You could even wear shorts and t-shirts to bring a little bit of summer to those cold nights. My kids also love to put on shows for us. They spend much of the day preparing for it. Getting their costumes ready, making up their own jokes, practicing songs, etc. will generate hours of fun for them during the day. Evening comes and they put on their show and we all have a great time laughing and performing.

A favorite of ours is to read a good book aloud to everyone. If you have kids old enough to read, then people can take turns reading. Everyone sharing a good book, will generate some great conversations later about what is going on in the book. Check out a favorite movie from the library and enjoy it while sharing a big bowl of homemade popcorn. A good comedy will surely get the whole family laughing. If there is snow on the ground and a full moon, why not go for some nighttime sledding? Come home for some hot chocolate to warm up before bed.

Spring is a great time to get outside. Not too hot and not too cold. How about a walk to the park after dinner? If you have younger kids, why not a big game of tag in the evening? This is also a great time to throw the baseball or softball around with your kids. Bike rides are fun too. It is just so nice to be outside again after a long winter cooped up.

Summer has the longest evenings of all. I consider this more time for fun. Picnics at the park, free outdoor concerts (check out your town's activities, many of these are free), hikes through the woods, etc. You can do just about anything outside in the summer. Is there a lake nearby? Why not go for an evening swim or fish for your supper? These activities are very relaxing for families to enjoy together. On really hot nights, why not take the kids out for ice cream after dinner? Going out for desert is much cheaper than going out for dinner. Do you have a local sports team in town? Not the professionals, as those tickets are going to be very pricey, but the minor leagues or a college team. Tickets to these events can be had for much cheaper than the pro sports and still provide lots of fun for the whole family.

Fall is a great time to spend time together. Your family could go apple picking or visit a pumpkin patch. Spend another night carving the pumpkins. High school football is always exciting to watch. Your family will have lots of fun supporting your local teams. The sun is setting earlier, but you could still go for nice walks to enjoy the crisp air and gorgeous leaves. Taking a drive with the family to enjoy the falling leaves is also relaxing.

No matter what time of year it is, there are plenty of things for you to do with your family. Having family fun nights is a great way to bring your family together. Explore your city or town. Often times there are festivals or concerts, children's activities, and sporting events. These things are going to be close to home and lots of times free. Check the paper for coupons or special nights. Many places have nights that are catered for kids and famillies, with prices for kids much cheaper than other nights. There are also things you can do together any time of year, such as cooking together, watching a movie, playing a game, going for a walk or bike ride, reading a good book, etc.

Anything you like to do, can become a family fun night when you involve everyone. For something to be special, it doesn't have to cost a lot. In fact, most of these ideas are totally free. Some take some planning, but many can be spur of the moment. The important thing is to just take the time to spend with your family. The good times and memories will be worth it.
