Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid that is found in certain brown seaweeds.  Carotenoids are phytonutrients like lutein, lycopene, and beta carotene and they are the nutrient that gives certain fruits and vegetables their color pigment.  In the brown seaweeds, fucoxanthin plays a role in the photosynthesis of the plant.  Fucoxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect cells from damage done by free radicals.

Recently, scientists have discovered the thermogenic effects of fucoxanthin.  These thermogenic effects help to promote weight loss by metabolizing fats.

Ocean vegetables like brown seaweeds have been used as foods and valued for their high nutritional content for thousands of years.  They are especially popular in Japan and other Asian cultures and they are revered for their health promoting properties.

So far, the only clinical studies on fucoxanthin have been done on mice with tremendous success.  Japanese researchers have found that fucoxanthin promotes the loss of abdominal fat in obese mice and rats.   Animals lost five to 10% of their body weight.  The exact method of how fucoxanthin works is still not fully understood, but it is believed that it targets a protein called UCP1 which increases the rate at which abdominal fat is burned.
