MEDICINE ART OR SCIENCE?

MEDICINE is a science for some.

In truth it is the scientific interpretation of art

clearly confusing ?

  • logic does not apply to medicine.
  • derivations and calculations defy statistics.
  • common sense helps to a certain extent.

so medicine is an art.

  • patiently accumulated observation
  • decision making
  • selective use of investigative modalities,
  • noninvasive methodologies
  • minimally invasive procedures, transparency and ethics
  • commitment
  • accountability
  • responsibility
  • further follow up

all the above collectively make the pratice of medicine an art

SWOT analysis of medicine

STRENGTH -

  •       APPEALS TO EMOTIONALLY BALANCED
  •   still investigations are the back bone in best best hands if  selectively used
  •   consensus approach
  •    dedicated  and devoted professionals still present
  •    modern appliances sans market

WEAKNESS -

                     REPEALS TO EMOTIONALLY VULNERABLE

                     DOUBTING MIND  DOES NOT BENEFIT

lack of trust , lack of cure

                     escalating cost

                     IMPRISONED   in intensive care

OPPORTUNITIES-

  •                     MARKET BOOM
  •                    AGGRESSIVE SURGERIES
  •                   INDUSTRY GADGETS
  •                   IRRELEVANT TESTS

 THREATS

  • - INSURANCE
  • INDUSTRY DIKTAT
  • EROSION OF CLINICAL SKILLS
  • NEGLIGENCE OF CLINICAL ACUMEN

what is clinical acumen?

clinical acumen  distinctly demarcates  the great doctor from the good doctor.

A GOOD DOCTOR TREATS THE DISEASE

A GREAT DOCTOR  TREATS THE PATIENT

those with clincal acumen,   ponder ,decide and find out the root cause which is  diagnosing unlike the modern day medical pundits  who  plot in  software and derive  at a diagnosis.

the  noun  and the verb sets  apart the best

clinical acumen is like your  basic clothing  like a  skirt  or trousers  or shirt.  the modern day gadgets  and  tools are  like  pearl  and diamond necklaces. on top   of a  good  dress sense  they  glitter.  but  by themselves    though  valuable and expensive they  are of  no use alone.  no body  wears  just  diamond  necklace and walks about.so clinical acumen is the art and  gadgets and tools are accessories.

PLEASE OPT  FOR CLINICAL ACUMEN  AS  FIRST PRIORITY  WHEN CHOOSING A DOCTOR.

The answer to the above question is undoubtedly a resounding YES! I've been a health professional for 35 years (nursing as a medic, paramedic, patrol medic, RN, cardiac tech) - you name it, I've probably done it! I've always taken an interest in the question what constitutes clinical science? I believe differential diagnosis is a belief system I call diagnosticism. And I believe it to be inherently pseudo scientific, the clinical picture is increasingly ignored as a consequence of the flawed logic of diagnosticism. Resulting in increasing levels of iatrogenesis, we don't observe in any real meaningful way. That's because the average practitioner (doctor or nurse) has a piss poor ability to take a history and do a physical examination, DDx makes people cut corners. What you actually need to do is construct the condition by systematic observation. Doctors fail to this preferring investigations to patient contact, and nurses don't bother observing, preferring to play power politics and paperwork!
