NFL Rushing TD Leaders By Year—2000s
Only four different running backs have led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in the current decade, and they are all some of the greatest backs the game has ever seen. And, all four are some of the greatest fantasy football stars ever. Here is the list of those players and their touchdown totals those years:
2007-LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers (15)
In a season that didn't start in typical LT fashion, as players like rookie Adrian Peterson led him in rushing yards for most of the season, Tomlinson did come on strong to finish with big numbers once again. And while he didn't come close to his NFL record 28 TDs the year before, LT did finish with 15 rushing scores. He also had 1474 rushing yards, and added 475 receiving yards and 3 receiving touchdowns.
2006-LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers (28)
LT was all-world in 2006, as he helped the Chargers to a 14-2 record by notching an NFL record 28 rushing touchdowns. Tomlinson also rushed for a career high 1815 yards, and added another 508 yards and 3 TDs as a receiver out of the backfield.
2005-Shaun Alexander, Seattle Seahawks (27)
Though it only stood up for one season, Seattle's Shaun Alexander tied the NFL record in 2005 with 27 rushing touchdowns. He also had a career high of 1880 rushing yards, and added one more TD as a receiver.
2004-LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers (17)
In the first of three seasons out of four that he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns, LaDainian Tomlinson had 17 of them to lead the league in 2004. He also had one TD as a receiver, with 1335 yards rushing and another 441 receiving.
2003-Priest Holmes, Kansas City Chiefs (27)
Kansas City's Priest Holmes had a few incredible years before a neck injury pretty much derailed his career. In 2003, Holmes broke the NFL record with 27 rushing touchdowns, a mark that stood until Shaun Alexander tied it in 2005, and then LaDainian Tomlinson broke it in 2006. That season, Holmes rushed for 1420 yards, and added 690 yards as a receiver.
2002-Priest Holmes, Kansas City Chiefs (21)
Though he would break the NFL record a year later, Priest Holmes rushed for 21 touchdowns in 2002, which led the league. He also had a career high that year of 1615 rushing yards, and added 672 yards and 3 more touchdowns as a receiver.
2001-Shaun Alexander, Seattle Seahawks (14)
Four years before he tied the NFL record in rushing TDs, Seattle's Shaun Alexander led the NFL in that category with 14 rushing scores in 2001. Alexander rushed for 1318 yards, and added 343 yards and 2 more TDs as a receiver.
2000-Marshall Faulk, St. Louis Rams (18)
Rams' running back Marshall Faulk was one of the greatest all-purpose backs to play the game, and in 2000 he led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 18. Faulk rushed for 1359 yards and added 830 yards and 8 more TDs out of the backfield
