South Beach Diet Phase 1 at Steak & Ale

A steakhouse is generally a good bet if you are on the South Beach Diet, as long as you are careful to select lean cuts of meat, or an acceptable entree or main dish salad. Here are some ideas for Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet for Steak & Ale Restaurants:


Bacon Wrapped Shrimp --Grilled bacon-wrapped shrimp served with herb hollandaise dipping sauce Just make sure to ask for the sauce on the side.

Shrimp Cocktail --Chilled and served with traditional cocktail sauce.

French Onion Soup--Just ask for the giant crouton to be omitted, and ask for the swiss cheese to be served on the side so you can add just a bit.


Filet Mignon--A hand-trimmed filet naturally aged and tender.

Filet Medallions--Two 4 oz. tenderloin medallions in a merlot demi-glace on a bed of mashed potatoes with a side of asparagus. Instead of mashed potatoes order a side salad or other available vegetable. And ask for the merlot sauce to be omitted or served on the side so you can use very little.

Kensington® Club--Their classic 12 oz. sirloin marinated in a special house blend.

Mushroom Stuffed Filet --Butterflied filet with sautéed mushrooms.

Top Sirloin --A center-cut sirloin full of flavor.

Steak & Ale also offers these acceptable sauces on the side with steaks:

Create Your Own Surf & Turf --You can select either an 8 oz. cut of Prime Rib or a 7 oz. Sirloin, so on SBD Phase 1 you'd want to go with the lower fat sirloin, and add one of the following:

Shrimp Scampi

Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp Skewers

Lobster Tail

Cedar Plank Salmon --Grilled salmon on a cedar plank, brushed with lemon sauce and served with asparagus.

Lobster Tails --Two Atlantic cold water tails broiled and served with drawn butter and a baked potato. Just order asparagus, side salad or other vegetable instead of the potato.

Bacon Wrapped Shrimp Skewers --Three skewers of shrimp served with broccoli, rice pilaf, and herb hollandaise dipping sauce. Order another vegetable instead of the rice, and it is good to go for Phase 1.

Chopped Chicken Salad & Soup --Chopped salad greens tossed with Red Chili Ranch and Colby cheese. It's then topped with bacon, diced eggs, tomatoes, green onions, and diced grilled chicken. It's served with your choice of soup, so order the onion soup or a broth based, acceptable soup of the day if they have one.

Grilled Tilapia --Tilapia grilled over an open flame and served with an herb hollandaise, broccoli, and rice pilaf. You can order a vegetable or side salad instead of the rice.

Smothered Chicken --Grilled chicken breasts with sautéed mushrooms, onions, bacon and Cheddar cheese. It's served with mashed potatoes, so ask for a salad or vegetable in its place.


The only acceptable side on the menu is asparagus, but it's likely you can get a side salad or another vegetable if you ask nicely.


Stick with water, sparkling water, diet soft drink, unsweetened iced tea, coffee, tea, or skim milk if available.


There is probably not a restaurant in the Western hemisphere that serves a dessert that isn't fat or sugar laden. So just have some coffee or tea, then enjoy your ricotta creme or sugar free gelatin when you get home.
