Taking Bargain Shopping Online - Overstock and Smart Bargains

Updated on May 6, 2007

Shopping online seems to be the latest and greatest thing. I would have to agree here. It is very difficult for me to go shopping. I rarely set foot inside a mall. Online shopping has made my life, and many others as well, so much easier! Did you know you can still bargain shop online? I have found one of the best ways to get great deals shopping online is to shop through a discount store. Overstock and Smart Bargains are two that come to mind quickly.

Why the bargains here? Frequently their prices are lower in general, because they don't have the overhead that brick and mortar stores do. These stores frequently get the extras from other stores. Things that the manufacturers just have too many of, or items that have been clearanced out of other online stores.

You can find just about anything you want at these online discount stores. You do have to act quickly though. Once they are out of the 5000 Calvin Klein jeans they received, they might never get them again. This is one of the risks to shopping at these online bargain stores. However, if you aren't looking for something super specific, you can usually find what you need at a great price.

When you shop online at regular stores or discount stores you should always check the shipping costs. I did a search for a women's athletic jacket on both sites. On Smart Bargains I found a great looking Adidas zip up jacket for $34. Shipping however was $8.95. I found a very similar jacket on Overstock for the same price and shipping was only $2.95. That is a big difference.

Check the return policy before purchasing, especially clothing. You want to be happy with the item and not being able to try something on is a little risky unless you know the brand very well. Both Overstock and Smart Bargains offer a 30-day return policy. You do have to pay for shipping the item back though, and they don't refund the shipping charges you paid to receive the item. Overstock also charges a $4.95 restocking fee.

Once you are visiting one of these sites, make sure you look around carefully. Overstock offers a "Steals of the Week" section, with great discounts on the already discounted products. This makes for some unbelievable prices.

Smart Bargains boasts "up to 70% off daily" and after looking around on their site, I believe it. Smart Bargains also allows you to search for clothing by size, which really helps narrow down the choices. They also have a feature that allows you to view other buyer picks, new arrivals and almost gone items.

Both stores offer a huge variety of items for sale. Toys, jewelry, clothing, bedding, shoes and kitchen items. Overstock even sells electronics, books, DVDs, and furniture. Both of these online discount stores offer some great deals. But like every store, every deal is not a great one. Pay attention to the prices, the shipping and the reviews. You don't want to get stuck with something you can't use. By shopping through these two discount sites, you can really save some money on items that you need. All from the comfort of your own home. You really can't beat it!
