The Joys of Solitude

Being Alone Doesn't Mean Being Lonely

If you are at a point in your life where you are facing time by yourself, this may be helpful to you. Whether you are choosing to be alone or your solitude is thrust upon you, it does not have to feel like a dreadfully depressing experience.

The first thing you must remember is this: Acceptance is the key. Accepting yourself as who you are is also known as "gettting right with yourself". This means being comfortable and at ease with who you are; you must completely accept all of your positive and negative aspects and traits. If you cannot do that, then you are not ready to be solitary. It is not an easy thing to do, but it can be done. In fact, you can incorporate "getting right with yourself" into the process of solitude.

Surround yourself with pleasing and peaceful items and objects, things that when you observe or handle them calm and soothe you. Having an environment that induces peaceful feelings will greatly assist you in enjoying your time alone. This can include tranquil music or sounds, fragrances that induce serenity, and visual surroudings that make you feel placid and soothed. Classical music or sounds of nature, scents such as vanilla, lavendar, and muted colors such as sky blue may help you achieve this.

Avoid thinking about things, situations and/or people that arouse aggressive or angry feelings in you. This is self-defeating and will only make you feel tense and upset. Do not blame anyone else for your being alone. It does not matter how your solitude came about; dwelling on that is also self-defeating. Again, accepting yourself, as well as your state of solitude is the most important step in being alone.
