Today's Southern Gospel Music

Updated on May 9, 2008

Today's Southern Gospel Music - Not Your Daddy's Old Time Music

Today's Southern Gospel Music does not sound like the Southern Gospel Music of twenty years ago. Today's Southern Gospel music has a new edge. Gone are the twangy vocals, the matching lime green suits, the beehive hairdos. In their place you will find a style of music that still emphasizes vocals and harmonies, but with a quality that was almost unattainable twenty years ago.

Today groups like Austins Bridge, The McRaes, Ernie Haase and Signature Sound are reaching a new audience while still making music that appeals to the older generation.

The Bill Gaither Homecoming series has sold more CD's, DVD's and Videos then almost any other Christian group. They consistently fill large arenas throughout the country.

One of the groups that has stood the test of time is Karen Peck and New River. Karen has been singing for almost twenty years. Her style has changed over the years but the quality of her work has not. This past year she was nominated for both Grammy and Dove awards for her "Journey of Joy" CD.

The sound of Southern Gospel music has changed but the lyrics have not. The lyrics of Southern Gospel present Gospel truths in plain, simple and effective ways. When you listen to Southern Gospel music there is no doubt Who they are singing about - Jesus Christ.

If you have never listened to Southern Gospel music I urge you to try it. If you can't find a local radio station that plays Southern Gospel music you can find one online at I host the Morning Show from 5AM - 9:30 AM. Tune in and let me know what you think.

I love Southern Gospel – one reason, it doesn’t leave out the Gospel of Jesus.

You got to love Guy.  Jake Hess spoke of him as the best lead singer today.

I have to keep an eye out for Mark Bishop. This sounds like the kind of album I would love.  I gave you a thumbs up. Thank you for writing. I’m so glad I found you here. ~ eddie

Please, can you send me the lyrics from "The Best of Ivan Parker" from the Homecoming Series. This has been advertised for a solid week; I bought the CD and was so disappointed there were no lyrics printed. I've spent hours trying to find them on the internet and only found two. Send to

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
