Very Scary! I wonder if Bush would or could really do this!

Updated on September 6, 2008

Use of Martial Law to prevent election and/or transfer of power

I heard some rumors yesterday that Bush's "plan" is to attack Iran in the next few months - probably once WMD are "confirmed" there and/or following another 9/11 type attack (by Iranians this time) that the neo-cons would orchestrate and the media would then sell to American public via the "owned" mainstream media

What really freaked me out most about the rumor was that the source stated that under Martial Law there would be no November 2008 presidential elections - that Bush/Cheney would remain in power indefinitely and that congress could not prevent this happening. This source said that because of the "revisions" Bush people managed to sneak into law there is currently nothing to stop him from doing these things.

I am trying to do some research on the truth of what I heard - but wondered if it's just me who is feeling "very afraid" if this really is possible. I believe the Bushies can also, under Martial Law, start rounding up "disinters" and putting us into FEMA - run "concentration camps". I don't mean to go off the deep end here, but can he really to all this? Especially the part about suspending the elections and any transfer of power!

Would congress beginning the impeachment process help to prevent this scenario from happening? Would the military and National Guard still have to take orders from him - or, worse yet, wouldn't these terrifying powers be then be held by Dick Cheney?

I am going to keep trying to find out if this stuff is really true. If so, we are really in deep shit - as in CIVIL WAR!

I'll tell you I wouldn't want to be in same position as the people living in flood prone areas of the country, within one hundred miles of the coastlines, or even inland flood zones.

Marina, I don't think your concern is misplaced. While it's true that there is a lot of hysteria out there right now, it's also true that sometimes when people feel paranoid it is because someone really is out to get them. Watching the way dissent was treated at both conventions, and now, witnessing the insanity going on with Paulson & Bernanke saying "just give us the keys, it'll be fine--oh yeah and we need $700 billion for starters," I don't think it's at all crazy to be on alert. I think it's crazy not to be on alert. I have lots of fears about what is going on right now too and I do not consider them irrational. Hang in there.

      Great question - Thumbs Up!

Dealing strictly in facts and evidence may be the only way we can get to the bottom of an unpopular subject like this. I've created a new kind of HubPage, a FactWatch page, to compile evidence on subjects like this and to allow readers to do the same. Have a look, and let me know what you think!

Willful ignorance is impossible to overcome. It is best ignored. Without attention it will usually turn against itself.

Thank you for the comment. Although I felt totally dismissed, patronized and bewildered after this Hub recieved the response it did, I chose not to respond with arguments - since I've come to see how pointless and futile it is to argue with that mindset.

Marina.  For you, who have every right to be concerned, and for all the sheeple above who are singing "Don't Worry, Be Happy.

Using this Bush could, with the flimsiest excuse, declare martial law.

The 2nd Amendment would stop that abuse. There are far too many of us who would not allow such a scenario.

Marina - You are sounding like a deranged conspiracy nut. Seek counseling before your paranoia takes you places you cannot come back from.

Perhaps you might want to answer "what or who" has stopped every other president from your fantasy.

Thank you for sharing, however I still have no answer to my question: I want to know "what" or "who" could stop Bush/Cheney from doing exactly what is being suggested?

The best thing about Bush Derrangement Sundrome is that it keeps the kids busy so we adults can get actual work done.

Thanks for the attempt at giving comfort - however I have to look farther, given the fact that this administration has so obviously "abused power" in many other ways in the name of "national security - many examples are documented even in the mainstream media. Specifically, I want to know "what" or "who" could stop Bush/Cheney from doing exactly what is being suggested.

Here is a link to another article - posted just today. It is titled: Without Impeachment, The 2008 Election Will Crown A King, Not A President. Link: http://justanothercoverup.com/?p=378

Well, you have no need to fear. Silly rumors like that have been around for as long as there have been politics. Conspiracy theorists love to spin a good yarn, and as long as they have anything happening in the world that people can be afraid of, there will always be something they can concoct ridiculous stories like these about.

So, you can relax, that rumor you heard is foolish and you have no need to fear.
