Paradise is always where you are! _ My top 5 places in Portugal
Lisbon, my birth city
On the right bank of the broad Tagus river estuary, the capital of Portugal graciously reclines over rolling hills. This is a spectacular geographical location and does much to explain the cosmopolitan history of the city. Its exceptional natural light, which has long inspired writers, photographs and filmmakers, the brightly coloured buildings straddling the slopes, the striking ochre of the roofs, the tiling on so many facades and the narrow twisting alleys of the medieval districts bestow Lisbon with the peculiar atmosphere of a city perched somewhere between the European north and the Mediterranean south.
Madeira, a place of beauty, passion and romance
Madeira is a tropical island. The Laurisilva Forest, in the Madeira Natural Park, is the largest evergreen forest in the world - a fact that has earned it classification as a world heritage site. Elsewhere the exotic flowers and fruits compete with one another in their variety and colour. And then there’s the sea, always blue and visible from wherever you are.
Açores, the lost land
At the core of the nine islands you will find a harmonious convergence of majestic scenery with the human warmth and way of life that is both timeless and contemporary. Over the years the Azores Islands have gained the trust of visitors longing for a holiday that is both safe and exciting, yet peaceful.Perfect for those who love nature, like me.
Viana do Castelo, land of pleasantness
Travel along rivers and across rolling green hills. Take the ‘eleven Romanesque churches’ route and finish in Viana do Castelo, beautifully situated at the mouth of the river Lima.
Explore the routes that lead down to the mouths of the rivers Minho, Lima and Cávado. Tour the hills and mountains before descending to beautiful towns by the sea.
Viana do Castelo is one such place. The Santa Luzia hill is the symbol of this city. Climb it and enjoy the wonderful panoramic views over the Lima, the sea, the hills behind, and the rooftops of Viana below.
Alentejo, the shelter
You will find here lands of tranquility and freedom, resisting against mass tourism. These are the lands of beautiful beaches, many of them still unexplored. My favourite place for writing...
Portugal is the perfect place to dedicate yourself to the pleasures of life, in the open air!
