Why I make my own diapers:
It all started when a child in my care came in with cloth diapers. I thought "What?!!!" They told me all I had to do was change it and place it in a bag to take home - no big deal. They were right! The only difference between changing her diaper and a disposible is that hers went in a bag and the others went in the trash. She had pocket diapers with velcro that were just as easy to put on as disposible. No pinning or folding diaper origami.
At this point, my son was potty training, so I didn't need diapers anymore. BUT, after doing a good load of soiled clothes daily for a couple weeks, I realized washing dirty diapers wouldn't be as difficult as I imagined. At that point I made the decision that I would cloth diaper my next one.
I researched the brands used by the child in my class and couldn't believe the prices. Granted, you still save thousands as opposed to disposible, but you have to put in a couple hundred dollars up front. Then I searched online auctions and couldn't find much. What I did find were a lot of WAHMs making and selling their own diapers. I ordered some and then found a bunch of free patterns online. I started experimenting and finally drafted my own patterns. There are many tutorials online as well that helped me. Honestly, I have tons of fun making them! I made cloth overnight pants for my son who still wets at night. I also liked being able to choose my own prints and colors. Name brands usually come in just a few colors and fabrics. I can make all kinds of designs from cute baby stuff to pirates, cartoon characters, retro designs, or whatever! I can make my own for a fraction of the cost of boutique cloth and of course it's not even close to the overall cost of disposible.
SO, back to why:
1. It saves lots of money
2. It keeps thousands of diapers and human waste out of landfills
3. You can use natural, sustainable materials that are gentler on babies skin
4. I have lots of fun sewing them and get to choose an endless variety of cute prints and fabrics.
5. I have gained enough experience to resell some of my items to help generate income for my family.
So, these are the main reasons I love to make my own diapers!
