My favorite part of living here in my hometown (Greenville, Mississippi) is the sense of familiarity and belonging. I was born and raised here; here, I know and am known.
We lived for about four years in a much larger city in Alabama. It's a very nice city, a lovely place to live, work, and raise a family. The problem is, I didn't fit. I met people, even made a few friends. But I felt as though I were lost at sea, floating on a rubber raft, watching the luxury liners and cruise ships pass by.
Here at home, I am among family and friends I grew up with. I know all the streets, all the businesses; I have connections and roots here. It's not the most glamorous, most prosperous place; but it is home, and it is familiar. I fit.
