I'm a fan of so many artistic styles, it's difficult to answer decisively. The art I tend to create leans more toward fantasy elements (based on a childhood filled with comic books), and that is my orientation, but they are mostly people and landscapes. I have worked in a realistic fashion as well, but the style has remained illustrative.
Recently I've developed an interest in Japanese art, which incorporates unusual elements of composition. For example, if you had a 1x4 foot canvas, Americans would likely see the four foot side as the length of the canvas, and probably create a landscape. In a Japanese style, it might also be a landscape, but we may see the four foot side as the canvas' height, with the one foot side as its length. I've seen (in books) many beautiful compositions that we wouldn't ordinarily consider, here in America.
Good question, Wayne, and I think I will make a hubpage about this.
