I had 2 tricks that really worked for me.
During each contraction, as soon as the pain becomes unbearable - Count to 10. By the time you reach 5-6, the worst part is over. It sounds ridiculous but it worked every single time for me. I can handle 6 seconds of severe pain! You have to take each moment as it comes. 10 hours of severe pain would be unbearable so break it down into each contraction. Each contraction is one step closer to delivery.
The other thing that helped was having a supportive husband. Husbands don't feel the pain but they are hurting too. We did pre-natal classes and if we came away with nothing else, he learned how to deal with a women in labor. The nurses told me that I had one of the best coaches they had ever seen.
He was encouraging but firm with me all at the same time. When I was struggling or getting discouraged, he would make me look him in the eye and tell me how good I was doing.
The loving support made the whole experience a memorable one.
Don't forget that our bodies are made to have a baby. It's such a rewarding feeling when you finally get to hold your brand new baby.
