I am living in Ireland, another English speaking country like the US. However, I believe we should be open to speaking other languages. Not only is it good for us to speak a number of languages, the more you learn, the easier it is to learn yet another! I am Gaelic speaking and English speaking. I lived in the Netherlands so I speak fluent Dutch. I have always loved French so recently my husbands work has taken us to Luxembourg. I am presently learning German but you can get by easily with French in Luxembourg. I find the more languages I learn, the easier it is to take on another one. I did Latin in school so learning Spanish and Italian was not difficult.
I know that to be mother tongue English is a real plus but for integration and flexibility in moving around the world, it is great to speak other languages. I am totally liberated and can be let loose almost anywhere in Europe and get by with the languages I have. It is not necessary to learn other languages but then why not? I believe the answer to many problems in the world lie in communications - we just need to understand a little bit more about our neighbours and learning their language is a step in this direction. Every foreigner thinks its just great if you make the effort to speak a little of their language at least. It shows respect and interest and some positivity in this area is a gateway to peace.
