Personally, I think the best option is to get a part-time job. Part-timers aren't usually asked to take on great responsibility so there's less stress. They may not get a high hourly rate but it's regular and predictable (unless the job disappears, of course).
If they need more income than that, then they can use the rest of the week to try making a living online.
