Kids Need Money, Too! Simple Ways Kids Can Earn Money

For all of the awesome kids out there who have a little extra spare time and an entrepreneurial mind that seems to never rest, these achievable money-making ideas can help them to not only earn some extra hard earned cash for that epic bowling alley birthday party or glamorous night out to the movie theater, but help them broaden their young minds for the bright future ahead.

Kids who learn to be independent and resourceful early in life apply those skills later (in school, in the current and future work world, and for the purpose of paying bills and utilities). Who doesn't want their child to be successful?

There are so many unique ways for kids to earn money that this list can't cover them all: a broad and open mind will help smart kids brainstorm dozens more ideas and pursue their dreams.

How Can a Kid Earn Money?
How Can a Kid Earn Money?

Idea #1: Rent Your Stuff Out!

Do you have a pair of jeans your friends love? Or maybe an awesome video game, toy, piece of sports equipment, or even jewelry? You can offer to rent it out to your friends!

Charge them a fair amount that they can afford. If you were to rent out ten items for $1 a day, you would have $10. After a month, that's $300!

You could have your first car, the latest iPhone, a new computer, or even save for your senior trip this way!

Idea #2: Kids Can Make and Sell Jewelry for Money

This one might be reserved for the girls, but jewelry is a very popular item and has been for thousands of years. Now, cheap jewelry is widely available, making unique pieces popular and sought-after.

This opens a wide market for those who love to create jewelry. Teens and pre-teens can make necklaces, hair jewelry, bracelets, chokers, cuffs, earrings, rings, belly rings, anklets, and toe rings from hundreds of different materials. Many hobby shops have these materials, and the tools can be relatively inexpensive.

Items can be sold to friends, family, classmates, teachers, teammates, and much more. (For selling in public places, parental supervision is recommended.)

Idea #3: Kids and Teens Can Edit Photos to Earn Money

Kids these days have the advantage of knowing how to use certain tools on the computer that adults don't have the time or knowhow to use. For example, there are many different photo editing programs available, and many teens, preteens, and even younger children are widely using them. Kids can edit photos for friends and family members to earn quick cash.

One of the best ways to let people know about photo editing talent is to print or save samples and show them to friends and family in person or through social networks. You could help friends and family with their profile photos, too. This skill could be extremely popular and lucrative around the holidays, when people are preparing their annual holiday cards with photos.

With all of the special events that go on in our daily lives, there are so many different opportunities for children and teens to try their their hands at photo editing!

Idea #4: Teens Can Use Photography to Earn Money

In addition to the above method, photography in itself is a profitable venture for any kid that has access to a camera. Photography can earn money for kids in different ways, such as those listed below:

  • Kids and teens can be hired by friends or family to photograph special events such as weddings, birthday parties, and graduations.
  • If a kid or teen is in contact with business owners, they could be paid to take interesting photos of new products so the business owner can place them on a website.
  • If the child or teen loves animals, they can start their own pet photography business by offering friends and family photo shoots of their pets.
  • If you capture a great shot at a sports event, a party, or a function, contact the person in the photo to see if they're interested in buying a copy.

Idea #5: Kids and Teens Can Start a Treat Business

If the kid loves to cook and bake, a baked goods business could be a good idea. He or she can mix up delicious cookies, cakes, brownies, and other treats for friends and family. If his or her cooking skills are advanced, they could even offer a catering service for special events.

  • Homemade, made-to-order, personalized birthday cakes
  • Appetizers for a party
  • Tins of homemade Christmas cookies
  • Baskets of decorated eggs for Easter

Everyone loves food, and what is better than having great food at a party or event? Food that the host does not have to prepare! This is a great opportunity for children to learn how to capitalize on their skills and interests.

Idea #6: Children and Teens Can Sell Unwanted Clothes, Toys, and Other Items

With the parents' permission, children and teens can sell unwanted items. This will usually require parental supervision and guidance. While this may not be a business opportunity for young children, it's a great way for a teenager to earn quick cash.

If you discover that you're really good at this, you could go around collecting unwanted items from people in the neighborhood and sell them at a garage sale (or online at Ebay). You could also charge a fee to help friends, family, or neighbors organize their own garage sales.

Kids Can Pet-Sit for Money

Idea #7: Teens and Kids Can Pet-Sit for Cash

For the child or teen who loves pets, pet-sitting can be very profitable.

Most pet-sitting is suitable job for older children. Many people work and don't have the time to give their pets the time and attention they want. Some pets don't have to be watched overnight: they may simply require feeding, watering, and walking a few times per day. But when people go on vacation or extended leaves and cannot take their pets, the pets will need care. Although many pet-sitting jobs require that the sitter come to the home of the pet(s), if this is not an option, pet-sitting can also be done in the sitter's home instead.

  • Walk dogs
  • Bathe dogs
  • Feed, clean, or play with pets whose owners are out of town

This is a great idea for children who can pet-sit in the neighborhood, or for teens who have access to transportation.

Idea #8: Teens Make Money by Buying and Selling Items

If a teen or child is a thrifty shopper, this might just be the job for him or her. This gig requires a passion for shopping, the ability to know which things people will want to buy, and the ability to find steals and deals. The items can be found in several thrifty places such as:

  • Yard and garages sales
  • Small thrift shops and consignment stores
  • Large used item stores (such as Goodwill)
  • Giveaways from friends and family

For example, an ideal item would be a dress that is very pretty and in good condition, bought for $1 and then resold for a bit higher. The child or teen can also lightly wear the items while waiting for them to sell as a marketing tactic. Trendy, unique clothes always sell well! Everyone needs clothing!

Idea #9: Kids Can Refurbish and Recycle Items to Make and Sell Handicrafts

For kids who are extremely innovative, artsy, and creative, these projects will not only help them earn a little money but they will offer a constructive activity for their free time. For teens and children who are just getting started, the ideas are endless. Here are just a few ideas to spur creativity:

  • Gourds can be used to make birdhouses. Once the entrance is opened, the gourd can be painted, adorned with flowers, and embellished with nest-making materials and a mini bird feeder strung to the exterior.
  • Old tables can be sanded, refinished, and have the bottom converted into a storage area or even a dog or cat kennel.
  • Bottle caps and pop tops are all over the place, and can be washed and painted or used as-is to create interesting items, from jewelry and bookmarks to unique 3D artwork and sculptures.
  • Foil pouches from juice containers and food wrappers are commonly used to make purses, wallets, and other items, as they've become quite the fashion statement in today's "Go Green!" world. This is not only good for the environment, but a great way to earn money by going green and encouraging reuse and recycling.

Idea #10: Teens Can Earn Money Washing Cars

Cars need to be washed all the time, and many people do not like the low-quality automated car wash establishments that we have today. Hand washing is the best way to ensure a vehicle is clean, but many car owners just don't have the time to do it. Washing cars for family members, neighbors, and friends is a great way to earn cash while having fun! Offer to wax the car and vacuum out the interior, too!

Kids Can Wash Cars for Cash

Idea #11: Chores for Children

Of course, many children earn money through allowances, that is, they do chores around the house for a set amount of money. Many parents pay their kids allowances, while others believe that unpaid chores are a way to prepare the child for a life of work.

Should a child's parents pay for chores it would be a good idea for the kid to actually do them, and for the child to have a routine method for saving those earnings so that they add up.

Really big things (like cleaning out the refrigerator or organizing the garage) may be one-time jobs you might do for a set fee, but smaller things might be performed on a weekly basis. An allowance can be paid for the following activities:

This is so fitting. Yesterday my daughter came down to my office and asked what she could do to make money. I pointed to her chore list! LOL Enjoyed the hub. Share and up!

Hahaha hey if you're going to dish out some money to them, at least have them clean while you relax right??? Hahaha maybe she'll find a bit of inspiration on here ;)

I love this hub! I think it's cool. Especially method 8, I'm not a teenager anymore, but I can apply that into my not-so-teenager life. Nice post!~

Thank you Lola, I've actually done this and it can be very successful; and fun! I wound up giving away several dresses to two preteen girls, I just never pursued the resale; I snagged 20 dresses for 20 bucks!

    • lolaestrella profile image

Dalila C 4 years ago from Denver, CO

Tell me about it! I love going for bargain hunting and I am in love with Goodwill stores. I am impressed with the 20 for $20! We should be a team. LOL!

Hahaha Come on down!!! We'll compete ;) Yeah I loveeee bargain shopping too; it's like a game of sorts! Then you can turn around, take everything home.... and impress the friends. And who knows, that $100 spent on stuff that you wound up stashing might just bring $10,000 later! Especially if you snag antiques and designer clothing! For example: my mother hit an excellent achievement. She found a lightly used Prada bag for $3. How about that?

    • lolaestrella profile image

Dalila C 4 years ago from Denver, CO

Apparently, I'm going to bypass Tennessee next weekend to Alabama. If only I can meet you and we'll have a game on! Just kidding!

Wow! Did your mom really found a PRADA? I could go gaga if I could find one! She's really lucky!

Natalie, you should take some of your passions, and turn them into a profit. Does that make sense? If you love to craft/sew, sell your creations. If you love to cook, bake and sell treats. Or you could become a caterer for friends and their families. Turn your dream into the American Dream.

Great ideas and very interesting and useful hub; voted up. I am going to put my kids to work!!! I was very impressed with the idea of sanding tables and recycling to make things and I really thought the photograph editing idea was both creative and fills a need. You're right - kids can really do a lot, and they will be filled with pride and confidence when given these opportunities to contribute in the marketplace.

could you get money for drawings or paintings or poems that you wrote???and do you know any places that hire at 13???

    • angryelf profile image
      Author

angryelf 3 years ago from Tennessee

Kirito, You most definitely can earn money for your artwork, in various forms. From offering prints to the original pieces. Poems, you can sell them, have them published, or publish them online on sites like these to generate revenue. I also do not know of any places who hire children of 13 years of age- it is possible at 14 in some fast food restaurants, however.

Ryan, it depends. Being red cross certified is a good idea period- it's priceless knowledge. If you're babysitting for friends/family, then no. Unless they require that you be. You need to be fairly experienced in children though :)

Littleboy, I would suggest the method that appeals most to you. Whatever your interests and passions are, turn them into money :) find a way to buy/resell/create, and find you a market to deliver your message to. You have to be interested in the work you are doing to be able to succeed :)

These ideas are really cool. I'm twelve and I'm trying to save up for a Fujifilm Instax Mini 8. (A camera that prints pictures instantly, in case you didn't know) I thought about babysitting kids in my family, but it seems wrong to take money from them parents, and anyway I think they wouldn't pay me either way considering I am family. I also recently petsitted for my friends cats while their family were on vacation. They didn't pay me either... I don't won't to sound rude to ask for money though.. help?

    • angryelf profile image
      Author

angryelf 3 years ago from Tennessee

Maria, it is PERFECTLY acceptable to ask for money. You are trading your time and labor for a service; that is your time, and time is money. If those people do not have free labor, it costs about $35 per DAY to board a single animal, and about $50 per night for 2-3 animals for an IN HOME pet sitter. Dog walkers charge about $15 to walk people's dogs for about 30 minutes when the owners are not able to (perhaps while at work). Babysitters usually get paid 8-10 per hour, and daycares charge over $100 weekly (that's for 5 days a week). If you are watching 2 kids for a 4 hour period, you should expect at least $20. If you are in home pet sitting, $20 per day. I hope this helps you. Remember: adults CHARGE for this stuff, and adults also PAY for this stuff. Your time, even though you are only 12, is worth money. Good luck Maria! I hope you get that camera!

      You gave good methods!:-)

I am 12 and I am really interested in earning some extra bucks, but I have a busy schedule on mon.-thurs. I have afterschool and on friday I get out of school at 2:20. Plus I have dance class on friday and saturday. But on weekends I am free. However I write poetry and I love to dance, draw, and do gymnastics. The only other problem is I live in a shelter:-( [which is not the best place to live in]

I could really use some tips, ideas, an suggestions. Do you have any??

angryelf 3 years ago from Tennessee

Ivy, if you click on the link to my other hub (how kids can start a business), you should find many of my tips there. Your basic rule of thumb is to take doing what you love and turning it into cash- you could draw, and sell your art online. You could offer to write poems FOR people, for them to perhaps give to loved ones. You could publish your poems online, and earn revenue from them (on sites like this)... there's sooo much you can do. I hope this helps some Ivy!

So, my parents don't pay me to do work unless it's hours of yard work and when I've tried to sell food and such I've only received about a quarter. However, I believe that I am good at art, wtiting, and singing and my friends and I have a group where we dress up as people and go out in public. We thought we could earn money for our group if we did something, but we're not sure what to do yet. We're all 12, 13, and 14. I'd also like to get some money of my own for, well, fandom merch. Any advice?

Hey babe! I loved this page. It was very helpful. I am 12, and I love and am very good at photo editing, but alas, no one would hire a kid when they could hire an adult with job experience. I have thought about street dancing, since I am good at that to, but it doesn't seem like the safest option. I have a busy schedule with extra curriculum activities, so time is a large issue when trying to make money. I need the money to pay off a lost school math textbook that costs 60$, and I need it by the end of the month. Any suggestions for me?

I would put up flyers, open a Fiverr.com account (people pay for people to do things for $5 there; as you level up and get feedback, you can charge more for bonus services), and post on Craigslist. You can definitely do it! You just have to SNAG an audience's attention! Free advertising is not easy; therefore, you have to really put effort into it. Once you get a name for yourself and LOYAL clients, you will see an increase in income. You just have to try hard. Successful people are successful because they never gave up! :)

The best way they can make money is if they put money on the back burner and focus on getting an education. Then once you graduate from college and your now trying to get money it'll be much easier. Yes you'll be in a load of debt, but it won't be hard to make those monthly payments.

so basically ive been asking for a lot of stuff from my family lately.. and I get all of it because they want me to enjoy my childhood and stuff.. but its expensive things. things like an iphone. I got that. a new trailor. were getting that and its over $20,000. im going out of town a lot kind of now too. and going to races (dirt bike races) which are expensive. and my old dirt bike, we sold it because I was into other things at the time. but now.. I want a dirt bike. they are very expensive. around $2,000 ish. My dad said I have to pay for it. I have to earn the money to pay for it. but I am struggling. I have 66 as of now. since yesterday but obviously I have a long way to go and I need some help. but I don't know what to do. everyone already has babysitters and landscapers and all my clothes fit me. please give me some advice. email me?

I'd definitely push you to publish on kindle! You can begin accumulating fans and royalties there too. Then when you publish you can post it as a physical book in addition so the future readers have the option to choose how to read them!

I am an old school kind of guy. My son is 25 years old and when he was younger I told him what I was told an honest days pay for an honest days work. Parents pay your children to do extra chores and even have them work for a neighbor or you can hire your neighbors kid for a Little bit of work for pay. This makes them appreciate things when they have to earn them and pay for them with their own money. Great hub and keep up the good messages.

Smart, yet I can easily make a great deal of cash by buying a bunch of O.K. computer parts, putting them together, making a P.C. worth about a thousand dollars! Maybe that should be added to the list.
