5 perfect retirement trips in the US

Updated on December 12, 2012

After decades of hard work, retirees can take advantage of their more open schedule and travel. Retirement offers the freedom of taking longer trips and travelling in the "off-season."

Experience and appreciate America's natural beauty and heritage. Spend your pension wisely. Research and plan trips that suit your tastes and needs.

A cruise offers entertainment while en-route to your destination. Consider Hillsdale College's annual educational cruises. Attend the lecture programs, take the land tours, and converse with like-minded men and women. Hillsdale cruise itineraries mostly feature Western Europe but have also included Alaska and the eastern seaboard.

San Diego

Relax on the beach in Sunny San Diego. Take a walking tour in Old Town and visit the world-class San Diego Zoo and Sea World. The whale-watching season runs from December through April. Bird-watchers can try to spot some of the 480 species that have been seen in San Diego County.

Hostels offer fellowship and are budget-friendly for those living on a pension. Shadowcliff Hostel in Grand Lake, Colorado is located at the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Accommodations include private guest rooms in the lodge, private cabins, and a dormitory area for individuals. Grand Lake is quieter than Estes Park. Hiking trails, scenic roads, and quaint shops offer numerous options for day trips. Spend evenings relaxing on the deck or in the shared lodge living room. Meet travellers from around the world of all backgrounds and ages.

New York City

Plan a trip to New York City. Visit the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and more. Take in ballets, operas, and music concerts at Lincoln Center. Purchase a New York Pass and receive discounted admission and some line-skipping privileges.

New England

Take a fall-foliage tour in New England. Taking a bus means you can watch the scenery instead of watching the road. Viator offers a reasonably priced day trip. Be picked up at your Boston hotel, travel through the New England countryside, and finish the day with a trip to an apple orchard. Caravan Tours offers an extensive trip through six states and includes stops at Plymouth Rock and Martha's Vineyard.

The trips of a lifetime are still ahead of you!

Great ideas. San Diego is an exciting destination, with great beaches and weather. A day trip to Coronado is also well worth it.
